I suggest that you check the LCD TV Ratings of various brands. Most of the time, it can help you when making a decision. This is what I do when I don't have any idea about certain products.

Good luck.

I'm not sure either - Im not convinced - gut instinct says something doesnt tie up but I cant find anything concrete to show it is spam.

I will give it a wide berth till I know for sure.

I am always wary when someone registers then makes one post with a link attached and then disappears

Now you have me at it.

Sorry Chris Mr.

I went to hit the quote key and hit the delete key on "Chris's post" and it got deleted.
Surely that should not happen, as I don't have privileges or anything like that to remove other peoples posts.

So (pst.... ) must be the answer.

I've managed to put it back, just to maintain Chris' embarrassment

Nearly did it again.

What about my embarrassment. :-[

But like I said, neither I nor other people "except admin" should be allowed to remove other peoples posts.
Title: Re: Spam Alerts
Post by: Floydoid on February 13, 2009, 07:29:25 PM
But like I said, neither I nor other people "except admin" should be allowed to remove other peoples posts.

The mods should be allowed to as well, but on most forums where I've worked, the protocol was always you did not remove the posts of someone of higher status than yourself.
Title: Re: Spam Alerts
Post by: roseway on February 13, 2009, 10:57:48 PM
There does seem to be something amiss with the forum configuration here, and I've raised it with Kitz.
Title: Re: Spam Alerts
Post by: kitz on February 14, 2009, 11:50:54 AM
I think what the problem was is that originally this thread was set so that only Admin, mods and any special groups could actually start a thread in this section.
However now that OF is 'helpful' (same would have applied to the ISP reps and Respected members) then it allowed him to start a topic in here.
...  and somehow along with those permissions it also allowed him to delete any posts in the thread that he'd started.

Since it was only the announcement section that had different permissions, and because OF had actually started the thread..  thats why only in this sectionand on this particular occasion it allowed him some moderating powers.
Ive now changed this section so that it now has the same permissions as elsewhere in the forums.

Thanks for letting me know :)
Title: Re: Spam Alerts
Post by: oldfogy on February 14, 2009, 01:11:18 PM
Thanks for the explanation Kitz.

Now you mention it and now look at the posts, I never a took any notice of the extra icons, but as I posted earlier with regarding removing the post (pst... I must be because I nearly did it again) basically I can see how now, because I am normally just so use to hitting the only icon that is there, whereas the delete post icon occupies  the same place as the Quote icon.
Title: Re: Spam Alerts
Post by: kitz on February 15, 2009, 08:52:31 PM
>> delete post icon occupies  the same place as the Quote icon.

Is it still there?  and is it only on this thread?

I changed the permissions yesterday so that anyone can now start a topic in this section, rather than it being just specific groups.
Changing the permissions should have reset it.
Title: Re: Spam Alerts

>> Is it still there?  and is it only on this thread?

No it's not showing on any other post now except my own.

Sorry I should have re-posted, but it's all back to normal now.
Thanks.

np,

Actually come to think about it, "I did post a reply" saying it was back to normal, (and commented on being demoted from something I never knew I had)

Another of my posts on a different thread has also disappeared. Although it maybe was "slightly" OT
It was on the http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php?topic=4304.new;topicseen#new thread.

I asked what was the implication of plugging a phone into a DSL line without a splitter.
But the question disappeared. (or at least I can't find it)
Title: Re: Spam Alerts
Post by: kitz on February 16, 2009, 03:04:50 AM
Its not been deleted..  certainly not by the mods/admin.

1) If they had,  it would be in the recycle bin.
2) It would also show up on the forum moderation log.

Youve not done a me have you?
Twice on Sat I thought I'd posted something - only to find later that I hadn't and I was in such a tizz that I'd never actually hit the post button.
Title: Re: Spam Alerts
Post by: oldfogy on February 16, 2009, 03:10:36 AM
Once possibly, but doubt it very much if I did it twice on the same night.
But what is the answer to plugging a phone into a socket without a filter please........ even, pretty please.
Nothing to technical though.

(Good job this spell checker works) time for bed I think.
Title: Re: Spam Alerts
Post by: kitz on February 16, 2009, 04:46:35 AM
>>> I asked what was the implication of plugging a phone into a DSL line without a splitter.

Depends if a modem/router is also plugged in as well.   If its just the phone then its ok.
The splitter (http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/splitters.htm) is there to separate 2 different frequencies.
However if a phone and router on on the line then the adsl data will cause interference on the phone which may well be clearly audible.
It will also likely cause problems with the adsl connection.. speed could be quite a bit slower, there could be noise on the adsl line.. which can materialise as lower SNR, data errors, and even loss of sync.

Does the Report to moderator link work?
Title: Re: Spam Alerts
Post by: tuftedduck on July 16, 2010, 03:05:08 PM
@ BritBrat...........yes it does, Mods and Admin receive an email to the client they have used in their profile, but such a report does not flash up anywhere in the forum.

This is why, as an example, two or three days ago unkyUb posted a spam warning in this thread and I said thank you to him........you kindly reported the same spam via the "report to moderator" button which generated an email ( not a PM) to me which I did not see until I checked my inbox later in the day...which is why I then edited my "thank you unkyUb" post to include a thank you to you.

It is not a very satisfactory arrangement in that such a "report to maderator" may not be spotted by admins/mods for some time.........which is why I consider thia thread as a better means of reporting spam..........although something of a personal nature, such as abuse, may be better handled through the report button and thus not aired on open forum.

Dealt with. Thanks for the reports. :)

Zoe, this is the easiest place for us to pick up, but if you prefer you can click on the 'Report to moderator' link at the right hand side of each message. That sends us an email, so there can be a delay before we read it.

@ zoe..........yes, please just any spam alerts here and we will pick them up.

Kitz is a little tied up just now and cannot give full attention to PMs .....roseway and/or myself will employ the sweeping broom to get rid of the stuff.

Thanks to you and unkyUb for reporting.

Next Time... I'll Come Straight Here!

Title: Re: Spam Alerts

Yes, I normally leave those links just in case they are needed for evidence later in the event of any complaint. Of course, if it was anything nasty I would remove it, but ordinary commercial spam is merely irritating.
Title: Re: Spam Alerts
Post by: tuftedduck on September 01, 2010, 05:20:18 PM
Further to roseway's comments above, as you can see now when a newer member arrives his name show at the bottom of the page and the problem one disappears.
So, unless you go specifically looking for the miscreant member in the member list, the profile contents are now not visible........and as a banned party, the user name will not be found in the member list.

So as far as members are concerned, the offending profile is now and forever out of sight and out of mind.....unless someone is curious enough to click on the link to his profile in unkyUb's post.

Touch wood, the vast majority of spam now gets filtered away from the forum using several different methods that we have in place.
However, theres not much that can be done about the guys that are probably sat in an internet cafe in an Asian country and being paid pennies for each successful post that they make. :(
These manual spammers try and make their posts look as genuine as possible, they are getting more + more astute and quite often even try to join in with the relevant topic.
Title: Re: Spam Alerts
Post by: tuftedduck on August 22, 2011, 07:31:48 AM
You're correct, unkyUb, in that such posters don't normally put in an avatar.......this one has gone to some lengths to hide their tracks.

You are right to be wary of anything from the USA.......especially, as in this case, the poster is elsewhere in the world.  ;D

edit to add oops, sorry Kitz for tramping on your toes. :)
Title: Re: Spam Alerts
Post by: burakkucat on August 22, 2011, 05:33:36 PM
As a forum moderator elsewhere, b*cat would like to say that he is in agreement with what Kitz, TD and others have said regarding sneaky, solo spammers who are paid a minimal amount per spam posting made. The degree of "social engineering" that some will employ to "fit into" the proposed target environment is quite amusing. Unfortunately (for her/him) there is invariably a give away that the post is the work of a spammer . . .

Without disclosing any site administrator's / moderator's "secrets", there are many levels that a "successful" spammer has to negotiate before her/his handiwork can possibly see the "light of day". And, finally, there is the last form of defence -- the eyes of the the regular forum users. :)

I opened the forum this morling and thought Oh no !

I used to go on an excellent forum years ago for Football referee's. The Discussions and feedback were superb. Then it got repeatedly hit with spam. Ruined the site. It became a mere shadow of what it once was. :'(

That reminds me I'll have to have a look to see what its like now

This is always one thread I am happy to open only to find I very rarely need to give any input.

I'm sure others have already spotted this but what is allidys9821 on about and should he be chastised. It's not really spam because he doesn't seem to be selling anything just cluttering up the forum with gibberish.

Is it a way to (theoretically) get a positive profile, by posting various non-spam topics then sitting a while and starting to spam?

The replies are either by someone with a poor grasp of English, or are generated by a program whose programmer has a poor grasp of English!

I've seen it on other blogging sites, where you get very generic replies saying things like "I learned a lot from this site", which are the result of robot postings to get a positive profile.

I've been pondering that one, and it does look a bit spammy, but it's borderline so I've left it for the moment.

Does seem borderline.  IP isnt from one of the usual spam type countries either.

However just noticed the account is listed with SFS, so I'll get the broom out :)

Not if its ok no.  :)

Just thought some of the way it was worded and you are always wary of a new member posting a link to somewhere in their 1st post .

Normally first posters with links are spammers, which is why we keep an eye open,  but this would appear to  be a genuine helpful post.  Also theyre in the UK,  unlike most spammers who come from china/india/ukraine.

hmmmmmm   :hmm: Thanks SM.

Not sure atm.  Seems to be a legit UK telco reseller, but as you say a bit strange how theyve jumped into the games section ala spamming  behaviour.    SPs normally introduce themselves either to me direct,  or post in the intro or ISP section first.

Edited to add

Since the sig doesnt include links - which is the usual aim by spammers to up their SEO ranking - Ive asked if he'd like to introduce himself to us properly.
