Hey there. So I like to play COD alot on the xbox 360 but I find that I have too high of a ping. Here is a tracert test to google

Tracing route to www.google.com [216.239.59.99]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1    <1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  voyager.home [192.168.1.1]
  2    40 ms    39 ms    40 ms  esr6.edinburgh5.broadband.bt.net [217.32.78.145]

 18    66 ms    81 ms    67 ms  216.239.49.114
 19    68 ms    69 ms    71 ms  216.239.49.114
 20    66 ms    67 ms    67 ms  www.google.com [216.239.59.99]

Trace complete.

As you can see my ISP is BT. I have interleaving turned on which is obvisouly going to add a few more ms but mines eem pretty crap. Most people seem to get under 30ms whereas most of mine average about 50ms. Also at hops 16 & 17 I get over a hundred in some which is crap.

Now my exchange has no LLUs so If I were to change my ISP, even with using BT's equipment, will I see any difference in my ping?

Thanks for any reply

The values shown in the intermediate hops (such as 16 and 17) have no relevance to the overall latency. Many servers prioritise actual throughput and give the ping response the lowest priority. Only the throughput matters from a performance point of view, so it's the end-to-end values which are significant (67 ms in your example).

Interleaving typically adds 20-30 ms to the latency, so your values are quite normal. The only way to get lower latency would be to get interleaving switched off, which might make the connection less stable. Your ISP should be able to arrange this, but you may find them unwilling.

It would also be better to tracert/ping to the actual gameserver and not to google. All that shows is that the transit to google from BT is quite busy these days. Quelle surprise eh? ;)
