Title: Best Browser?
Post by: Rahat on November 03, 2008, 03:51:07 PM
1)Which internet browser is the fastest and most efficient in your opinion?

Im currently using Mozilla but am wondering if there are any better browsers.

2) Which browser are you using at the moment?

I always use Firefox (currently V3.03). I never use any flavour of IE if I can possibly avoid it  ;)

I've heard that Google Chrome is faster than FireFox 3.0 and IE. Have you tried it?

I refuse to have anything from Google on my PC.

Google is possibly the most virulent form of spyware that you can be infected with.

Yh, i just did a bit of search and the reviews do actually seem bad in general.

Im going to give Opera a try, does it use less resources than IE and or Mozilla?

Im using Opera right now and it seems faster than IE.

Just looking and reading you post in Opera (no other tabs etc open)  and am using about 45Mgb RAM..............don't know how that compares to the other browsers.

The program itself takes about 10.25 MB space, and the config/profile about another 5.

Ok, i definitely see improvements when browsing with Opera.

Are there any guides to optimize settings?

I couldn't get on with Opera, you find that some sites won't display correctly with it :(

I use Firefox 3.03 and compared to IE on Vista, it flies!

 That is a true fact!

The speed of IE and loading web pages is shocking on Vista, but yet on Firefox it is impressively quicker!  :linux:

I just tweaked Opera by using some settings from a website and it responds even quicker now!

I'd say Firefox wins hands down... on the few occasions I have to use IE tab for awkward sites they always seem to load slower when using IE's engine.

Two FF functions I really like are:

1) The option to have Firefox restart with your previously opened tabs & windows.

2) The History function which not only stores your previously opened tabs, but also remembers the history of that particular tab... very useful if like me you're forever closing tabs absent-mindedly.

Try using FasterFox on it, improves browsing speed alot.

I know FasterFox doesn't work on FireFox 3.0.3 but i have a modified version of it. I haven't touched any of the settings. Just changed the maxversion and version value.

There are varying opinions about Faster Fox - I used to have it, but it didn't seem to make any appreciable difference to overall performance.

I do use various performance tweaks tho... I quote from my archives:

Quote
1. Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

network.http.max-connections-per-server - set it to 16

network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy - set it to 8

network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server - set it to 8

network.http.pipelining - set it to true

network.http.pipelining.firstrequest - set it to true (create if necessary)

network.http.pipelining.maxrequests - set it to 32

network.http.proxy.pipelining - set it to true

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages 2-3 times faster now.

To make the changes, find the entries as described above and double click them, this will change them.

For number 3 do as instructed and you'll get a first box, paste the new name into it and press "ok"

When you done that another box appears and thats where you put "0" then ok.

I'll oink to that.  :D
iwas using IE7 until about 3 months ago,I was having problems with pages loading slowly or not displaying properly. Then some of the guys on here told me to try FF.Have never looked back, its a lot faster and smoother than IE7.

Currently using Firefox 3.0.3

I really like Opera as a browser, and I used it as my main browser for a while, but there are a few site incompatibilites so I went back to FF.

I do also use IE quite a bit - say for eg if Im doing something for the site i'll check it in IE first.  I also quite like something thats called "IE developer toolbar" which is an add-on but very useful if your site uses CSS.
Same if Im working on some modifications on the forums/ changes to layout, i'll normally be logged in as admin in IE so I dont mess up my cookies.

So.. for general surfing its FF, but for working on the site its IE.

Google chrome is a  no (http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php?topic=2845.msg77561#msg77561) for me.

I used the same settings Floydoid, but for Opera.

I'll apply those settings that you posted for FF on the downstairs computer.

Thanks

There are a few caveats about those suggestions. First, the "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" option is capped at 8, so setting it to higher values achieves nothing. But more importantly, these tweaks are a bit antisocial (sorry to be so blunt) because they can cause you to hog a particular server at the expense of other people trying to access it. Indeed, if the value of 32 were actually allowed for this option, it wouldn't take many simultaneous Firefox users to bring a site to its knees. Some sites have been known to ban certain users from accessing their servers, because of the devastating effect which the multiple simultaneous accesses can have.  I urge you (all) not to use these tweaks.

Sorry again.

Floydy,
"huh!"     Me too!
From the Avant web site Faqs:

Quote
Is Avant Browser a secure browser?
Yes, Avant Browser is secure. Since it's based on Internet Explorer, Avant Browser is as secure as Internet Explorer
  :(

Then they say the latest test was on IE6

Tested Systems:
                * AMD K7 800 / 256 Ram / Windows XP Home Edition / Internet Explorer 6
        * Pentium-4 2.4G / 512 Ram / Windows XP Professional + Service Pack 1 / Internet Explorer 6 SP1

Will stick with FF 3
