Title: An Accident Waiting To Happen ??
Post by: Broadband1 on September 06, 2008, 11:57:24 PM
http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/06/30/doomsdaycollider.ap/index.html

A few scientists want to shed some light on how the universe was created. Surely they've gone a bit looney.

Quote
But some critics fear the Large Hadron Collider could exceed physicists' wildest conjectures: Will it spawn a black hole that could swallow Earth?

Or spit out particles that could turn the planet into a hot dead clump?

This is a very interesting read from David Shukman of the BBC:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7543089.stm
Just spent almost an hour looking at his short reports and playing with the graphics.
It obviously cannot explain it fully but he covers it with some deatils and facts and figures that are quite astounding.

I have no idea what they will learn from it or what good the information will be to mankind.
Regarding the possibility of a major catastrophe, I should imagine there has been a lot more research into this than our Government have done into security of personal information.
Another one of their 'losses':
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7602402.stm
but it is unusual in that they did not know for 12 months then couldn't be bothered telling the Minister.

I would sooner trust my life with the scientists than my data with our Government or any of their departments.

Maybe if all these so-called scientists were put on the dole and their salaries put to-wards helping the economic communities (the poor) then there would be no world debts'

I know where I came from.
I know where I'm going (maybe not when)
I know everything that has effected my life during these events.

When they control the weather and the devastating effects it has on us.
Then maybe I might have some respect for what they do.

Human beings are explorers by nature, and this is one of the biggest scientific explorations ever. I've got some sympathy with your views OF but I don't agree. That viewpoint can always be applied to advanced speculative research, but if we did so we would never make those amazing technical advances which do eventually benefit the ordinary people; life would be very dull, if worthy, and we would probably all be poorer than we are now.

And as for the extremely remote possibility of devastating black holes resulting from the experiment, I'm totally in agreement with Dave. Extensive risk assessments have been done by scientists and engineers, not politicians. The prophets of doom seem to be the kind of people who would stop us doing anything interesting just in case something goes wrong. And I suspect that in this case, a lot of the opposition comes from the USA and is inspired by the fact that Europe is doing something bigger and better than they've been able to do.

Here's a good program

It's an hour long

Avalable till thursday 11th september 9:59pm

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00dccnr/

Personaly I belive the idea this will create and event horizon leading to a black hole that will swallow the earth is far fetched toung in cheak mischief. If I'm wrong come round my house  ;)

With out us scientists the world would be a dull place.

Michael (scientist)

Edit.. I have just had a look at that BBCi program about 'cern'  :) It was fascinating  ;)

See 'Cern'   http://public.web.cern.ch/Public/Welcome.html

Just as a postscript to this, I thought that the 'end of the world' worriers might feel better to know that the LHC is powered by Linux. (http://blog.internetnews.com/skerner/2008/09/large-hadron-collider---powere.html) Now you can sleep easy in your beds.

... which probably originated in the USA because they are p!ssed that they didn't think of it first...

I think it's great BTW, I'm all for scientific research... you never know what (unexpected) benefits for mankind will result from such projects.

Some from NASA space projects...   http://www.thespaceplace.com/nasa/spinoffs.html

That's quite a list. I didn't see it mentioned, but I sleep on a space programme spinoff - a memory foam mattress.

I think that site has been going for some time and has not got everything on it.

I'm still taking in about the 'Cern project' and another great link about the 'facts timescale'.

I didn't see non-stick pans either... I was always lead to believe they were a bi-product of the space industry.

No use having non stick pans in space Floydoid - your porridge would go everywhere!!  You want it fairly firmly stuck to the sides of the pan in a zero gravity situation  :graduate:

There are a couple of webcam feeds from the LHC now.

Thanks, but they go off after 4sec !
I did find some other video feeds by even though I set up rules in my firewall, It keeps blocking it  :'(.

oopsie

I suppose good job it wasnt a malicious hack..  and that the LHC system wasnt connected to that part of the network.

As Kitz said it's a good thing it wasn't a malicious hack. A token of information I gained from that was the bit about 2600Hz and how it was discovered in the 1960's in America that if you played a tone of 2600Hz down the line it could be used to access restricted parts of the nations Telephone network  :graduate: You never know when you might need that  :)
