Title: Toob Southampton FTTP installation
Post by: moojuice on July 28, 2022, 09:24:58 PM
So, Toob have finally passed my mums house in Southampton. She was on a Talktalk ADSL service on an Exchange Only line with around 10meg down and 0.5 meg up.
Toob announced last week they were accepting orders on her road, so she placed an order straight away and the service has been installed 8 days later!

They've used existing Openreach poles and added a few of their own in the neighbouring roads. Installer came in a Transit van cherrypicker to make the fibre connection up the DP, then up a ladder to secure the other end of the fibre dropwire to a new anchor point fastened to the soffit of the house and from there, to a Toob branded wall box. They are using pre-terminated fibres with plugs on them for quick connections.

The ONT they're using is an Adtran SDX621i ONT XGSPON which according to the spec, supports 1Gig on Ethernet max.
(Attached images, Adtran serial & MAC obscured so it's not copied).

The router they supply is a Sagemcom product branded for Toob. I think the model is MSG-V2000ER120-024E0-GB. Whilst that's on the spec sheet in the box, the router itself doesn't state the exact model number.

Speedtest is a lovely 902 down and 942 up. It does flucuate a little bit but seems very good so far!  ;D
Price is £25 a month + £8 a month for a static IPV4, otherwise you're behind a CG-NAT connection. That static IP now allows me to directly dial into a raspberry Pi and then remotely view her CCTV system in emergencies, and with a descent frame rate.

Now all I need to do is wait patiently for them to build their network where I live in Southampton. My 80/20 FTTC connection is clearly not enough.....

Their router is not fully locked down like some AltNet providers, but is lacking in many bells & whistles.
You can change the router IP address, define DHCP  / static address range on the LAN, tweak or disable WiFi settings etc. Port forwarding options are present and work but there are no QoS settings.
It seems to do the job and no more.

Looking at the toob site, they do allow users to use their own router, but like most ISPs, want you to retain the original one in the event of fault finding.
Anyone using their own router on Toob or a similar Altnet?

Thank you for posting about the successful installation. All are interesting reading.

I think that's the power supply model, Bouygues Telecoms used the same PSU for the Bbox NG+R1 (Fast5330b-r1 v2)

D'oh! Misread the datasheet that came in the box.
Looking further at the router, it didn't have any interesting ports open, no Telnet or SSH open that I could see on a port scan. To be expected these days.

Hopefully others in Toob's install areas find the photos etc useful prior to ordering the service! Being one of the smaller AltNet's they don't seem to get much of a mention online compared to CityFibre, Hyperoptic etc. When I went searching online before she ordered, there wasn't a huge amount of detail to be found of the kit they use.

My parents had Toob installed last year. I tested a Draytek router on one of their lines and it worked just fine - the Adtran ONT hands out an IP via DHCP. Annoyingly they introduced CGNAT earlier this year so you need to purchase a static IP to get a routable IPv4 address, but even after the 18 month offer period if prices stay as they are it'll be £37/month for 900/900 internet which is only a couple of quid more than my current 80/20 FTTC.

Toob say it'll be available to me in the next couple of weeks or so and I'll be using an Opnsense router with it. They also support IPv6 so I'll have to get my ahead around that!
