Title: VM representative tried to push in his way in to my house
Post by: Bowdon on December 08, 2021, 05:49:49 PM
So Virgin Media are officially off my radar.

I've just had a guy claiming to be from VM interrigating me at my door. Apparently me just looking up on their website to see if that Gig1 service was available seems to make these representatives think they are entitled to put the heavy sell on.

I told him I wasn't interested in changing my service mid way through his speech. But he carried on asking all sorts of questions while walking towards me and my front door. When I didn't move and repeated I didn't want the service he says "there is no need to be rude" and walked off.

I don't appreciate a hard sell. Someone more vulnerable would have likely been pressured in to signing something.

I'm in 2 minds whether to make a complaint.

I understand the reluctance but I would, some years ago my 90 year old mother in-law had a visit fro  a pushy utility salesman which took me ages to sort out.

I'll have to get their email address.

I'm reluctant to go on their website as he said I'd enquired 9 times about VM. The 9 times he's talking about is when I was checking if the 1Gig service had gone live in the area.

Talk about big brother tactics.

I'll have to get their email address.

This should help -- https://www.ceoemail.com/

Select the V option and then look for Vermin Media (or whatever they are currently called).

Thank for for the link.

The guy was very unprofessional.

so did they try to push their way into your house or didn't they?
the title suggests they did, but then the content of your posts makes no mention of any attempt to do so (other than walking towards your front door).

this will be one of those self employed contracted sales people. virgin will probably note your comments but essentially do nothing about it.

I'm curious why you're running availability checks if you have no interest in taking the service?

Most telecoms sites have it in written on their availability checker page that they may contact you if you make enquiries on their site.

The guys only doing his job at the end of the day.
He probably has people slamming doors in his face all day long.
If you've enquired about the service 9 times then why wouldn't they send someone to your door to try get you to sign up?

From what you've written above the only rude part was you.

Nothing wrong with him telling you not to be rude.  Interrupting someone mid sentence is indeed rude.
I would have said the exact same thing to you.

I'm not a fan of trying to get people fired for doing their job. Especially when you made repeated enquires with the company.

I'd already told him I wasn't interested in changing service. But he kept doing his speech. Then he started walking forward nearly getting in my face hoping I'd step back. It's not a good situation during covid to have someone within breath distance. If I'd have stepped back he would have stepped across the doorway. Then when I didn't move and again told him I wasn't interested, he called me rude and walked off.

I think trying to get me to walk back so he could step in to my house is an attempt.

You seem to be becoming a contrarian these days.

Why is it curious that I wanted to know if the 1Gig service was available here when it currently wasn't and we were approaching VM's own deadline? Are you saying you've never looked up your home address multiple times on checkers to see what is available to you?

I haven't landed here from Mars. I have had sales people at the door previously. Usually when I tell them, in a polite way, that I'm not interested they said "ok" and the interaction is friendly because I've saved us both time from standing there for no reason.

Would you rather me let you do your speech for 5 minutes and then said I don't want it, or would you rather me tell you early that I'm not interested in changing services, and you can move to the next house?

So you think I'm rude for attempting to politely quicken the interaction for us both. But this guy is breathing on me, no mask, and walking towards me trying to get me to move back so he could step forward, and thats ok with you?  ???

Stepping in to someones space is an aggressive act. I don't know if this guy had covid. The guy seemed disorganised, including taking a phone call mid-interaction.

it's likely that both you and him were rude, just an assumption though.
you could have easily just said "no thanks" and closed the door, that would have stopped him dead without giving him the chance to say you were being rude.

there's zero risk of you getting this person sacked though should you email anyone, they are self employed sales reps and any email you send will be deal with via a "stock" response to you then filed in the trash.

So when this guy identified who he was and what he was selling, and I reply "I'm ok with my current service and have no desire to change thank you", is counted as being rude?

At that point he should have said, "ok, thank you for your time" and left.

I think slamming the door in someones face would be considered rude.

I think you're right about what would happen to a complaints email. Because they have done this before, and that was to a current VM customer, who complained. But the fact they are still doing it shows they haven't changed.

he wouldn't be a very good door-to-door salesman if he did that.
their whole raison d'etre is to try and talk people round.

you closing the door straight after saying what you did would have ceased the interaction immediately, and you then wouldn't have felt like he was trying to "push" in, and you wouldn't have been told you were being rude. they may still think that but they wouldn't have the opportunity to tell you that.

Ok, there as been an update.

The guy came back today and apologised. He said he was back in the area and felt bad for it being a rushed interaction.

The conversation was friendly this time and he offered the deal and give me his card if I want to take up the offer.

So at least it was a fair resolution and no hard feelings.

or it was all a very well planned tactic by him from the start.
initial interaction didn't go well.
comes back and it apologetic and manages to talk you round to becoming interested again.

bravo to him, you've been played.

It must be contrary month  :)

I've not been played as I have no intention of taking a VM service. I was only checking to see if the 1Gig service had rolled out here. The area was the last 1.1 million on their network.

Bring on FTTP

so why did you get into another conversation with him then?
you keep saying you have no intention of taking Virgin, yet some of our actions seem to contradict that.

if it's contrary month then you are a major participant in it.
if all you want is an echo chamber where you hear back exactly what you wanto hear them maybe the salepersons initial impresson was correct.

Because I'm a nice person and give people the benefit of doubt.

When I typed contrary earlier I was typing it in a joking way.

Have a Merry Christmas chenks  :)
