Title: 4G indoor speed of iPad with Three
Post by: Weaver on November 14, 2021, 10:06:18 PM
I tried speedtest.aa.net.uk with my iPad’s 4G i/f (WLAN disabled) and the measurements were 19 Mbps down / 3.9 Mbps up.

How does that rate for 4G or 3G ?

After the test I noticed the iPad was showing 3G in the status indicator at the top rh corner of the screen. I am not in a good place in the room; I would say that I don’t have a line of sight to the basestation. The basestation is I think at an angle off to the left hand (north) side of the east-facing bedroom window, in the shadow of what is possibly a thick heavily-built wall, but not quite sure.

Good Evening Weaver, could you confirm the iPad model number, if that's over 3G HSPA+ https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Speed_Packet_Access

That's pretty decent.

It is, I think, a v4 (purchased April 2021) iPad Pro largest screen whatever that is. In Settings > About :: model number :: "MXF52B/A" and "A2232".

Was a new model iPad Pro released late this spring? If so I think I screwed up and should have waited, but my iPad Pro v1 was getting very unreliable and I was rather desperate.

I've no idea how that compares to a newer model, but it's an eight core gigabit LTE device according to everymac:
https://everymac.com/systems/apple/ipad/specs/apple-ipad-pro-12-9-inch-4th-gen-a2232-wi-fi-lte-cellular-hong-kong-taiwan-specs.html

It can aggregate bands to get up to speeds of 1000/100 in perfect conditions, so a speed of 19 down and 4 up within a property is pretty decent.

Is that speed 3G or LTE?

Is that speed 3G or LTE?

Probably 3G, as Three's current LTE bands do not penetrate buildings that well.

I'm sure this is slightly different on different iOS devices, but on my iPhone 7, it says "4G" or "3G" in the top-left corner of the display, next to the signal strength indicator and mobile network name.

I also have the option to force 3G or 4G if I go to:

Settings -> Mobile data -> Mobile Data Options -> Voice & Data

You could try forcing it to 3G and see if that makes any difference to your speeds.

Those are very useable speeds and if you had an outside antenna I'm sure you could improve on them considerably.

Much of the time, I don’t get any visible 3G/4G status indicator in the top right hand corner.

If it's like my phone you won't when using a wifi connection.
