Title: Can you recommend a router for home office?
Post by: tojazenn on June 27, 2021, 09:01:25 PM
I need a router that can do more than just standard Virgin Media hub. It will be mainly used for SOHO so that some working from home (WFH) and evening gaming sessions can be run by children while we are still working. Also, since it will be used for my little office, remote access such as VPN should be supported (at least 1-2 tunnels).
Broadband speeds of up to 1Gb expected, DDNS, VPN, usual firewall and NAT settings for Raspberry Pi projects such as a web server or smart home.
Any wifi router recommendations are welcome. Please post your router model used, what is it used for so, and why this one so that will help me to choose the best model. Price can exceed £130 but the range is up to £400. Thanks!

Welcome to the kitz forum.  :)

I would like to clarify one point . . . Do you mean a modem/router "all in one" box for use with an xDSL based service? Or do you mean a router that can be connected to either an xDSL modem or a FTTP ONT?

I used Netgear Orbi RBR40 mesh system connected to a VM router (in modem mode).

Rock solid and plenty of coverage in 4 bedroom property.

I do not use a VPN but I do know the RBR40 has the facility to use one.

This is for Virgin connection so no DSL nor ONT

Thank you for the recommendation. The spec page does not include any type of VPN protocols being supported :( It is a nice looking router through with an extra AP for tri-band wifi, worth considering if no advanced features are needed.

Ah, I see. So you are only interested in routers with an EWAN port. Thank you for clarifying.
