Title: Moving a fibre optic cable: who can help us?
Post by: Tom Heller on June 06, 2021, 01:00:21 PM
Hello Kitz Forum members.  I wonder if anyone is able to give me some general advice, Please.  I live in a cohousing community in Sheffield.  We have a fibre optic broadband connection coming into the main house through a cable at the back of the house.  We now want to do some fairly extensive landscaping in that area and the boroadband cable is bang in the way and needs to be moved.  We can do the trench work ourselves and lay a conduit but how do we go about moving the cable itself?  I imagine this could be quite a specialised job and needs a fibre optic cable technician who knows exactly what they are doing... Are technicians like this available for a bit of consultancy work / advice and do people with this knowledge exist outside the big contractors - who we are keen to avoid if possible.  Who in Sheffield or South Yorkshire can give us the best advice?  Thanks for your assistance. Tom  :)

I would have thought the the fibre coming into the property is the responsibility of your ISP and as such you shouldn't really be touching it and should be contacting them for advice. The problem is that they will likely want to charge a lot of money to move it, but probably not as much as if you get it done yourself and something goes wrong.

Welcome to the Kitz forum.  :)

As tubaman has mentioned, you will initially need to raise the request via your service provider. Exactly what would happen after that request has been made depends upon the owner of the hardware infrastructure. There are two possible scenarios --
In both cases, you will be liable for the full cost of the work. The total cost could be reduced if you are capable of installing the new duct-work to the required standards and your assistance is accepted.

Good luck . . . and please do let us know how the project progresses.

How far do you need to move it?, would it need to be lengthened ?.
Is it in conduit now or in the ground.
Need more info so people can help.

Me being a DIY person if it could be moved with out having a longer piece of cable installed I would just move it and say nothing  :o
If it will be too long when it's moved just make a coil of it before it's buried.

If it's anything like the pieces of fibre off-cuts I was given to look at when they installed it in our village it's very very tough, the fibre's are well protected.
