Title: March Patches
Post by: g3uiss on March 10, 2021, 06:24:01 PM
Major issues with March quality update affecting W10 and equivalent servers. Think the patch has now been pulled from windows update. Documented on Ghacks and Askwoody. Removing patch successfully resolves issues.  ::)

My three Win 10 20H2 machines picked up this patch yesterday. Appears the issue is with printing causing a BSOD in some cases. I've just tried a print to my two printers on one machine and it seems ok so perhaps I've been lucky.

That's a really sticky situation for people who run Windows DNS Servers as there's a CVSS 9.8 vulnerability affecting the DNS role of Windows Server that has been patched on the March updates.

It affects printers that use series 3 drivers. The MS KB now acknowledges the issues, suggests alternative printer drivers and that a fix is due “this week”. I’ve patched machines that don’t use the affected printers but left those that don’t.

I’ve done all 2019 servers as non of them are print servers

What are 'series 3 drivers' please?

If you open printermanagement.msc and look under servers-printers. You will see the drivers listed and the series is in the last column. Note not in the drivers tab. If unsure I will send a screen grab

Appears that 'printmanagement.msc' is not available on Win 10 Home. My one Win 10 Pro machine shows the 'Driver Type' as 'Type 3 - User Mode' - is that what you mean?
It still appears to print without issue by the way.

Yes that’s the driver type. You can add to W10 home the printermanagement add in.

Here is the link. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/release-health/status-windows-10-20h2#1570msgdesc

Hope that helps. Your lucky it’s reported that type 3 causes the issues 4 and above are ok.

Looks like it's mainly Kyocera, Ricoh, and Dymo printers affected - https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/windows-10-crashes-when-printing-due-to-microsoft-march-updates/
I have an HP and an Epson, and as they are major brands I'd have thought they would've been mentioned too if widely affected.

My works PC updated Friday, printed a document this morning and instant BSOD.

Luckily thanks to this thread I knew exactly what the problem was, quick Google, simple cmd entry, and one restart later problem resolved.

My printer is a Kyocera.

I have an HP Officejet Pro 6830 and when I did the printmanagerment.msc and looked it up there are 6 entries, half with type 3 and half with type 4.

I've tried printing 2 documents, one from a word procesor (Libre) and one of a pdf file as I wasn't sure if it was using different types. So far no BSOD.

First thing I did was print a page on my HP Deskjet when reading the OP. Fortunately no problems and as the thread has continued the brands affected has become apparent. :)

KB5001567 is now available as an optional update to address this, but I probably won't be installing it as I'm not seeing any issues.

That’s a good plan it’s recommended you only install if required. I will be testing today.

Yesterday I had a patch KB5001649 to fix the patch  to fix the patch KB5001649 :) to fix the printers... rinse and repeat.
New problem MS store seems broken, but I did fix the Lync problem myself, so no more red warning messages.

Except for zero-day exploits. YMMV

The MS Store has been quite the disaster for me. I HAVE to use it for Xbox Gamepass but last time it tried to update Microsoft Flight Simulator it gave a useless error.  I tried uninstalling and now it wont install at all.

What makes this worse is the DRM and permissions crap that Microsoft use makes a real mess of storage.  Somehow it makes it so you can't manually remove anything Windows put into WindowsApps, even Linux can't do it.  So I have left over files from when it broke last time and I renamed the folder (somehow it let me do that) that I cannot remove without a complete format.

I also had the issue where Metro Exodus crashed after the intro movie, on all other stores you fix it by removing the movie files but of course the Windows Store version is locked away so I just couldn't play it at all any more.

I had a Notepad problem! apparently it was corrupted even though it worked fine ??? so I did a Inplace upgrade using Windows 10 iso then finished by reapplying last 5 updates, now all is well.
sfc /scannow reports no errors and my Skype/Lync fix still works.

Winver now at 19042.870
