Hi,
I am on BT infinity 1 and until now I have been using a Home Hub 6. I got a HG612 modem in order to be able to use a different router.
Thanks to the instructions on this site I unlocked it and installed the latest firmware, and now I plugged it in and connected it to an Asus RT-AC66U router, and after everything turned on I am getting slightly slower speed.
The HH6 was syncing at 55Mbps, quite stably (connection was reset less often than once a week), and I was having speedtest of around 52-53Mb download and 10Mb upload.
The HG612 synced at slightly lower speed, and my speedtest is 50Mb download and just under 9Mb upload.
It's nothing alarming I guess, but I would like to have the full speed I was getting with the HH6, so I was wondering if there any settings I can try.

For now, follow the simplest rule and do not disconnect the modem nor force it to retrain (resynchronise) for, say, at least a week. It is best not to invoke the wrath of the DLM process.
Other members, who routinely analyse xDSL line performances, will -- I'm sure -- ask for sight of more detailed statistics. From the command line, the output produced by the following, may prove useful --
xdslcmd info --stats

xdslcmd profile --show

Do you know whether your line terminates on a Huawei or an ECI DSLAM? (The electronic gubbins in the "fibre cabinet".)

I had already turned off and on once before your reply, with no change in speed, so I will leave it on for now.
As far as I could tell from online search the cabinet is Huawei (without actually walking out and seeing the actual cabinet), which is why I got the Huawei modem.
Btw, there's a difference in the ping as well (used to be 5-6ms, now it's 7-8). I do wonder if it has to do with the router, or the fact that there are two separate boxes.

Knowing the above, I can now say that, assuming the connection remains stable, the DLM process will start the process of lowering the target SNRM in 1 dB steps. Currently the target SNRM is set to the default value of 6 dB. So the first positive intervention by the DLM process will be to try the circuit with the target SNRM set to 5 dB. If, in turn, that proves to be stable . . ., etc. The lowest possible value that the DLM process can try (and settle upon) is 3 dB.
This gradual lowering of the target SNRM will increase the synchronisation speed of the circuit and, thus, the throughput available to you.
I've taken a quick look at the rest of the data and, as far as I can see, there is nothing obviously untoward. Hopefully other members will also take a look and comment, if necessary.
So you just need to "play the waiting game". On final comment from me, for now, . . . You can disconnect or restart the router as often as you wish, for the DLM process only monitors the VDSL2 (ITU-T G.993.2) link between the VTU-C (the cabinet based DSLAM) and the VTU-R (the HG612 modem).

Thank you. So far however, 2 days later, I see no improvement.
I can wait more though, I understand it can take a week or so. Meanwhile though I would like to make sure that my configuration is correct. In the reported stats the modem says download of >50 and upload of 10, and it seems some of that is lost when I measure it. Previously the measured speed was much closer to the reported one by BT HH6 (for example it was reporting 54/10 in the web gui and I was speed testing 52.5/9.7 or so). So the reported is not very different from before (and identical on the upload) but the actual is lower (unless the reported by the modem is not the equivalent that I was seeing in the HH6 GUI). Is it possible that there's something wrong with the settings?
What makes me suspicious is that my Synology NAS is complaining that I have two routers (see attachment). I did set the modem to bridge mode, but I wonder if it's more that is needed. And so is it possible that it's not configured correctly and that is responsible for both issues?

There is no need to configure anything in the HG612's settings once it has been unlocked. It's default state is as a bridging modem for VDSL2 (ITU-T G.993.2) circuits. So just revert it back to its default state by pressing and holding the Reset button for, say, 20 seconds.

The one exception may be to disable QoS to gain 1Mbit of upload at the cost of potentially more buffer bloat. Although a good router should be handling that anyway.

No two lines are alike and what works brilliantly on one line may only be a very average performer on another.
The HG612 is quite old now but was popular because it could be easily unlocked and was both stable and achieved decent (not necessarily best) sync speeds on a large number of lines.

I did that before I installed and unlocked it, and then left it alone. Are you saying I should do it again? As far as I can tell, it is in bridge mode now, and it's reporting 52/10 sync speed, but I'm not seeing that when I test from end devices.

That would be on the router, right? BT HH6 also had QoS, but could it be that it was more efficient/faster than the Asus?

In other words, in my line, the HH6 performs better than the HG612?
The thing is, the line is capable of higher speeds (I think at least 60/15), and it's capped at 52/10 by my broadband package (Infinity 1), so with either modem I should be able to achieve this speed and no less.

It's a pity you haven't posted the stats from the HH6 before you switched for comparison, but from the stats you've posted you're not hitting a package limit with the H612 and its syncing at ~52MBit with the standard 6dB target SNR. You say you're speed testing at 50MBit...this is very good for a 52MBit sync as the IP Profile of the line is always lower than the sync speed.
Most comparisons I've seen show the 612 syncs slightly slower than other broadcom based devices (e.g. Zyxel, the HH6/SH2) but like others have said is popular for other reasons especially stability on a wide variety of lines.
The HH6 was probably very likely a tad more sensitive and achieved closer to a 55MBit sync with your line conditions (but unlikely capable of very much more unless your H612 has issues). The only way your line is capable of more than ~55MBit is if DLM decided to lower the SNR below 6dB which could happen as you're on a Broadcom cabinet and the quality of the line is good enough to keep the errors low. The side effect of this will be a change to ReTx High and a slower IP Profile though (this is automatically the default setting when DLM uses SNR targets below 6dB - search the forums for a lot of threads on this). So if DLM does drop your target SNR to 5dB you'll prob hit 55MBit sync but your IP profile will be just under 50MBit meaning slower speed tests :o.

It was the QoS on the modem! It was turned on even though it wasn't doing anything other than wasting 1Mb from the upload speed. So now upload went to 9.5 (download still just under 49 but that's less of an issue).
I checked the other settings just in case (see attachment). Are these ok?

As you have shown that screen, there is one other thing you can do . . . and that is to delete the redundant VLAN tagged 301.
- Place the cursor on the line that begins with the connection name ptm1.301
- Left-click on it and it should then be highlighted in the darker blue colour.
- Place the cursor on the Remove tab and left-click on it.
- Wait for the screen to refresh and then go down to the Submit button & left-click on it.
