Title: BT / Openreach Speed Tester Broken
Post by: Robbie on October 28, 2020, 12:10:02 PM
Noticed the BT Speed test has a 'new' look (yep, its been a while since I used it) but beyond the purple theme it seems to be broken - at least for me.

If only my G.fast could reach 532 Mbps!  The upload figure is correct though.

Is it broken for everyone, or is it some local weirdness?

Seems to give the correct result for me . . . but I am not impressed with the animation.  ::)

What browser are you using? I get weird results in Safari but Chrome is okay on a Mac.

Clicking that link in Safari on an iPad yields results that are clearly ridiculous, downloads of 35Mbps at first attempt, then 52Mbps a few minutes later.   If only that were true. ::)

I am currently connected at ~27Mbps according to Zen and have been for many months, clearly capped at that exact rate, which never varies.   Other half is currently on some kind of Zoom conference, concurrent with which Speedtest.net reports a much more credible ~25Mbps to same iPad.

Have given up on the BTw performance tester since the "new look" interface appeared a few months ago.
UL consistantly reports speed 4 to 5 Kbps greater than my UL synch speed !
DL speed is consistantly reported1 to 1.5 Mbps greater than any other speed test utility.

Occasionaly still use to check DS BRAS IP profile disregarding the speeds reported but more inclined to use mouselike.org now.

Have found that the revised utility is less sensitive to browser being used, the previous revision definately did have issues with Firefox on a Win 10 platform.

When I last tried it years ago it used to consistently give me horrid download speeds, yet performance was fine everywhere else, I think I last used it in my plusnet days.

The BT tester consistently reports a higher ping (by maybe 10 - 50 ms) than I get from other speed tests, and usually under-reports my speeds by at least a few mbps.

I've spun-up a Windows machine and the speed test results are more credible.  Perhaps this is a macOS / Safari comparability issue with the BT test.  Although I've never seen such an issue with any other speed test site.

Still, a reasonably pointless diagnostic test - even with the rocket graphic.

For my amusement, I retried the speed tester.

This time, the stated throughput speeds (both ways) were greater than the synchronisation speeds.  ::)

If any interested in "outside UK" test result, I ran the test 3 times:

1st >ping was way up 95ms >download was little lower than my 70mbps >upload was about .25mbps higher than my 7mbps

2nd >ping was 45ms >download was also below 70mbps but higher than the 1st test >upload was the same as 1st test

3rd >ping was 38ms >download was 70mbps >upload was same as 1st and 2nd test....
