Title: Things not displaying properly
Post by: UncleUB on July 23, 2008, 06:55:29 AM
Hi all,Got this little problem witha couple of things not displaying propery.I,is part of my BT home page doesn't display content as it should and 2,my Sky news sidebar gadget is the same on every section,ie news,uk news, world news, business news and strange news.no matter which one you click they are all the same. The section on my Bt page where it says 'Today'(that is the news section) is blank. The news is displayed on the right with the 'quick pick' section(which is games, radio, music etc) Also on my homepage some of the things don't work when you 'click on them'.I have done a system restore but still the same.I noticed this yesterday morning, but later on the day everything was fine.?????????
I know not many users have this set up but any help would be appreciated.I am wondering if anything is missing is the reason for this  happening.

Edit,just to add,every other website/page is fine,no problems.  :)

Eric, its something I have never done before so I'm a bit wary.Do you have say Firefox and IE7 on your desktop and click on whichever you want?..........or.Would changing my browser affect my Sky news gadget in the vista sidebar?
I have just clicked on the uk yahoo site and thats fine.I am trying to see the connection between my BT homepage and the sky news gadget, also the ITN news gadget is the same. All other sidebar gadgets are fine.

Phil, the two browsers would just be two independent applications, each with their own configuration settings. Assuming that you're using IE7 at present, if you were to install Firefox I think it would offer to import your IE7 bookmarks etc., but it might be better not to do this but start from a clean installation in case the IE7 configuration has got corrupted somehow. You would have to choose one of them as your default browser, but that's easy enough to change afterwards.

Unc .. You can have more than  one  browser.   I have IE7 but I use Firefox most of the time now...  ... you can just click on whichever you want to use  ..  you can then import your favourites from IE to FF  .. they are then Bookmarks on FF .. everything should work in FF as it did in IE  .. I find FF much faster than IE   .... and a bit more interesting.

If you want to give it a go       http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/    ....

 :)

Ooooops !   we almost collided Eric  .... :)

Unc ..  I don't know anything about McAfee  Advisor  ...

see here the add ons for Firefox which you download within FF and install  .. (this is a very simple procedure)

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4490     (for your Web mail)

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search?q=Google+Tool+Bar&cat=all     (you can have your Google Toolbar within FF)
http://www.google.com/tools/firefox/toolbar/FT3/intl/en/index.html     ( I have numerous search engines at the click of the mouse)

I use messenger skype and Yahoo Messenger ... no problems at all

hth     :)

I've just found this  ...

http://www.siteadvisor.com/download/ff.html

Firefox has it's own  site advisor add on  ....    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3456

There are HUNDREDS of add ons  Unc  ... which you can install very easily ...I would suggest you have a look at the Firefox link I posted and you can have a look at how it works and look around at the Add Ons, Extensions, Themes etc....    You'll like it  .....  and if you don't you can  get rid of it !!   :)

PPPS  !!!      There is even an IE tab  add on which enables you to use the embedded IE Engine with FF ....

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419

Edit,wow,things load a lot faster.How do you clear your browser,temp files,history.cookies etc?

Unc,  are you downloading Adobe from within Firefox ? ..   If so let it close Firefox and install and I think Firefox will then open again automatically, alternatively I've copied the link for the Adobe Flash Player for Firefox here ..

http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/

so you can close Firefox, download/install  Adobe and then re-open Firefox  ....

don't worry about asking questions, if I can I'll answer them  !!!

I don't know what you mean about closing firefox, how do you download it without the browser open

1, clicked the buttom to download the flashplayer (firefox 1.4)
2,new box opens, you have chosen to open, install_flash_player.exe. which is abinary file from http://fpdownload.macromedia.com
clicked save file.
3,opens another window, install_flash_player.exe  1.4 macromedia.com
4,window opens asking if I want to open excutable file, click ok.
5,new window opens,do you want to run this file, click, run.
6,Program needs your permission to continue, click, continue
7 new window telling me firefox needs to close d before the adobe plug in can be installed...........................what am i doing wrong.

UnkyUb, trying to download from Adobe will take forever.
Go to http://www.filehippo.com/ and look in the section "browsers and plug-ins" and scroll down to Flash Player, then click and download and save it somewhere suitable. Then shut down Firefox and install as you would any other prog.
Next time you open Firefox you wont see any difference until you get back to the site that was asking for the flash player.

The important thing, and I think this is what scottiesmum was driving at, is that there are two flash players, one for Internet Explorer and one for all the rest, so if you want the Firefox one, it is the "rest"

Td,it is the one for firefox/mozilla.

Follow the link as above. When you get to "browsers and plug-ins" you will see flash player for IE listed............ignore that and click on the tab "view more" when that opens, scroll down to Flash Player (Non- IE).............that's the one you want.

Just another little question, how do you clear your browser history, sites visited, cookies etc ?
Title: Re: Things not displaying properly
Post by: tuftedduck on July 23, 2008, 03:38:24 PM
Two ways, depending on whether you want a one off clean now and again, or some form of automation.

If the first, go tools>clear private data

If the second go tools>options>privacy and look at the options to either clear data on closing Firefox or to ask you if you want same cleared. The choice is yours.

Also, in tools>options>privacy>history, have alook at the various options and select the one to suit.

You will find the options for cookie handling in there as well.

I think that's right......long time since I used Firefox.

I'm back  ....   the strangest thing  .... I've ridden myself of all my add ons ...  tinkered with ALL SORTS of settings  ..... it's up and running again now, BUT ...when I try to go to the CA site it crashes !!!   do you thinks it's trying to tell me something     I haven't a clue what the problem could be, has anyone else  please.  I have been on most of my regular sites, no problem ... but I've now tried three times to get onto CA and three times it has crashed, and if I remember rightly, it was when I went on CA earlier that it crashed originally   :'( :'(    stumped !!   and now I've all my add ons to put back    ::) ::) :-X

Well  it is obviously an issue with Vnunet because if I try to access CA by the Computer Active url.  there is no problem   ??  ..  Hey ho  !!  :)

Finally back to normal; well almost .. the Vnunet site still causes FF to crash, so I'm using an alternative URL to access the site  ... still confused though :shrug2:   I've put all the add ons back on, and all working fine.     Glad you like FF Unc .. have a look at the  Themes you can choose from all sorts of things for the appearance of FF.    Enjoy !

Just a Firefox question, where the 'home' and 'reload icons are, what can you add at the side of them.Anyone got any ideas. Also underneath those icons is another row, most visited, getting started and latest headlines, can you add things on that row.The Mcafee site advisor is at the bottom right hand corner of the screen,is that where it should be or can you move it?

UnkyUb, if you go view>toolbars>customise, you will find lots of options.

The view menu itself contains a varoety of options.

Happy playing around !  :D

Whe I click 'tools',then 'add ons',it opens a window which says, get add ons, extensions, themes and plug ins.My question is, is it possible to have those icons on my toolbar rather than keep opening a new window everytime,if so how?

I don't know, but there is a very good guide to Firefox, almost an instruction manual, at http://www.dria.org/wordpress/archives/2008/06/12/655/ which may be worth a visit.

Unc  ... have you seen the Daily Dilbert add on in FF  ?   The Andy Capp cartoons are wonderful  ......you have a choice of Dilbert, Peanuts, and a couple of others ....
