Title: Very Intermittent Phone Fault
Post by: mikeh on August 18, 2020, 12:09:59 PM
Hi I'm wondering if any of the experts here can help with a phone fault I have.

About 5% of my landline calls are inaudible to the person I'm calling, whenever I'm speaking all they here is a muffled noise as if I'm heavily gagged. I fix this by disconnecting and redialing which always works. This is sometimes reversed and it is my end that cannot make out what they are saying and also if I redial it fixes the problem. I have two digital phones and it has occurred on both so I don't think it's a handset problem.

The line itself does have background hiss/buzz but from past experience I know how difficult line faults like mine are to trace. My line has had some repairs in the past with two sections, underground and on a pole that were damaged and repaired.

At the moment I'm reluctant to report this because it is very intermittent.

I would report it always..... even if it's intermittent  :(

My line has ALWAYS had a strange buzz on it, right back from the ADSL days.  My second (inferior) line has the same noise though not as loud.

No idea if it impacts anything but as I did used to get full VDSL speeds with that noise I suspect its from the E side and filtered out from everything but the voice service.

I have reported the problem and the line was tested, nothing showing with voice check. Tonight had the fault 3 times in a row so I'm at the corded phone in test socket stage. I will see how it goes over the next few weeks.

Always a good idea to record the problem so when an engineer comes you can playback and demonstrate the problem especially if it is intermittent and it may not show problem when engineer is present.

+1
I used the app on my mobile phone to make several recordings when we had a HR joint (or bad joint) that would not show when the BT chap came.

I will post an update on my phone issue, I won't be doing any more with this.

After a week with the corded phone there were no problems, I needed to return to the dect phone for convenience with caller display etc, another week and again no problems until today with one call. All I can say is I've eliminated the face plate. I've decided to move over to mobile for all outgoing calls, I get a good signal with E E. Also the 4g broadband speeds of approx 60mb+ down and 30mb up are way better than my FTTC  broadband 15mb down 1 mb up. Thanks.
