Title: PTM standard
Post by: Weaver on May 19, 2020, 01:09:35 AM
I have just gone blank. I can’t remember where the PTM protocol is defined, where the standards document is? Can anyone help me out?

I remember something about EFM, but what about G.992.3, G.992.5 and G.993.2 which uses PTM ? What do those specs reference?

PTM -- Packet Transfer Mode.

Used by VDSL, VDSL2 and G.Fast services (ITU-T G.993.1, G.993.2 & G.997.2). Not ADSL2 and ADSL2+ services (ITU-T G.992.3 & G.992.5).

Perhaps the ITU-T SG15 Technical paper (12/2011) (https://www.itu.int/dms_pub/itu-t/opb/tut/T-TUT-HOME-2011-PDF-E.pdf) may provide some help?

EFM? Are you thinking of Ethernet in the First Mile?  :-\

PTM is defined in Annex K of G.992.3 (ADSL2), which refers to G.993.1 (VDSL1).

I have seen PTM referred to as EFM, presumably an acronym for Ethernet Frames Mode.

Ah, that's where it's hiding. (Must try to remember.)

Thank you. That makes sense.  :)

is it somehow related to this line when getting line stats from telnet? linkEncapsulationUsed=G.993.2_Annex_K_PTM and my line is VDSL2.

Yes, that is correct.

Somehow I had downloaded a G.992.3 document that was missing that annex, and then later after an enormous amount of hassle, I found what I needed separately. Thanks to all.
