50c Hard Drive Temperature. :o
Acer Aspire 5738Z running PCLinuxOS, Backed up. Runs 24/7 for DSLstats :)
I've had a few crashes with the screen locking up (maybe video driver ?), the latest screen went off with only flashing cursor top LHS.
Sometimes I could log out by Ctrl + Alt + Backspace.
Other times I have to use the Linux 'reboot' Ctrl + Alt + PrtSc and reisub
This last time the above did not work So I can Press the on /off button to shut down.
It would not boot, with 'No Operating System Found' :'(
On Linux we can use a 'Live CD' to run the OS, I did this ok, so Hardware was ok. :)
So I had a look at the hard drive and it was hot at 38c, it is three years old.
Took it out and put it back in but left the cover off.
Checked fans running ok and cleaned any dust out.
Last night I checked the hard drive temp again it was 50c .
This morning 40c.
Now 50c again !. :(
Do you think the 1TB SATA hard drive is dying and I should order another one ASAP.

I'd highly recommended getting an SSD, will run much cooler and faster.
Sure its more expensive, but if you can live with less space you can offset that somewhat, especially as it will feel like a completely new PC with one.

From a very quick Google of "HD temperatures" not sure that 50 deg. C. is really an issue ?
As Alex Atkin UK has said, SSD is the way to go at least for your operating system, it does transform an old PC unbelievably, much more so than adding extra RAM and cheaper too.
If physical room permits, use a smaller, cheaper SSD for your operating system and retain the old HD for bulk storage.

I have several HDDs in my desktop and all of them run between 36-42 °C so 50°C does seem a tad high but then again in a Laptop with less room and probably no fan near the HDD it may not be an issue.

I do recall mention that laptop HDDs (at least some of them) can be rated up to 60C. I do personally not like seeing a HDD above 45C though, too many bad memories of the old Maxtor 7200RPM drives that ran insanely hot with a high failure rate.

That's not good, I just double checked and it does seem laptop HDDs do have a max operating temperature of 60C.

It's always been in that range when I've been working the system hard . . . The fan and heat-exchanger are clear of any dust/debris.

Apparently this model of laptop has had problems with other people so I am going to check the fan and heat exchanger are clear of any dust/debris.

Spent most of yesterday taking this laptop to bits to get the fan and it's heat pipes off for cleaning, cleaned old heat sink compound off and renewed, removed any dust, reassembled and it all worked :-\ ;D
Seems a lot better, running at 46c, been on 18hrs.
