Title: ZyXEL VMG1312-B10D Chess Telecom admin password
Post by: whatkatedoes on April 18, 2020, 05:17:19 PM
Hi all,

Bought one of these off ebay to retire my openreach modem.  Advertised as new-in-box.  It was, if the box a little tatty.  However, I cannot get it to login.  Not with the credentials in the instructions (admin/1234) nor any variant of the usuals.  I reset it, still nothing.  I noticed on the box a label for Chess Telecom, and guessed it was an ISP provided device, and must have some baked in password that survives resets.  Tried the list of known zyxel passwords, no luck, found a topic on this very forum for another Zyxel device in similar situation that even referred to another forum for Chess Telecom users and the issue, but that forum is no more it seems.

Does anyone have any advice with how to circumvent?  The seller is being arsey, but tbh, I just want it to work.

Unrelated - I have a Billion 8800NL lying around that I used to use as primary router, but in modem mode it would lock up my Asus RT87 for some reason after a while.

I expect the thread you found is this one - https://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php?topic=16836.0 - assume you've already tried those passwords?

Apologies if you’re ahead of me here  :)

Did you do the poker-in-hole reset; turn off, poker in hole, and, while poked still, turn on and keeping poker in, wait ~20s until flashing red led goes solid then release poker, then load standard firmware

That I have not!  I'll need to read that really slowly again and have a go :D

Havent quite got the knack of this yet, power LED flashes red once then just goes to pulsing green booting as normal I think.

Have you tried admin/zyad1234 ?

Have you tried this one: https://support.aa.net.uk/B10D_Factory_Reset

These instructions are what I use for a B10A not a B10D so I’m hoping that things are the same.

* Set your own machine’s IP address to say 192.168.1.99 / 255.255.255.0 / gateway 192.168.1.1
* Plug ethernet cable into modem’s port 2 or 3 and into your machine (or via switch)
* Power the modem off
* Insert a pokey implement into the modem’s reset hole to depress the switch (there is a similarly sized but protruding WPS)
* Power modem on, keeping poker poked in all the time still
* Keeping poker in, LED will flash for 20s then go solid red
* Release poker
* If the device is left in the solid red light mode then a recovery page should appear at http://192.168.1.1, but only if the ethernet cable is connected to port 2 or 3. Port 1 or is it 4 -which is it -will not work, depending on which way you read the port numbering. (I think the port on the far right is the bad one.)

You get a ‘load firmware’ prompt on a recovery page on a B10A.

If that doesn’t work, try Andrews and Arnold’s B10D reset instructions (https://support.aa.net.uk/B10D_Factory_Reset) - the factory reset section, not the first section because the standard reset just resets back to the ISP’s defaults, not ZyXEL’s.

Edit: doh. I’ve just noticed an earlier poster posted the same link. What hushcoden said.

I had a very similar scenarion back in Oct. 18 after purchasing a S/H ZyXEL VMG1312-B10D on e-bay as a spare, see this post:

https://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,22543.0.html

It's rather long winded but with the help of many forum patrons got there in the end, hope this helps.

Yeah the supervisor password must have been changed too, as it didnt work through standard login or telnet.

I think I'll just raise a return with ebay/paypal - despite the seller's protestations "how can there be a problem its just new out of a box" - rather than do any case opening or serial shenanigans.

Booo :(

 Weavers instructions should do the trick and are very easy. Loading the latest fimware that way should get the normal passsword back to default.  First download the latest firmware.

  Once the latest firmware is in a telnet login and using the command "save_default clean" should also remove all traces the isp settings.

If you don't wish to get too involved and perhaps don't have serial connecting hardware capabilities than return/refund is probably your best option.

My e-bay seller at the time was very understanding, gave me a full refund and told me to keep the unit.
As I like a challange, I achieved a satisfactory outcome in the end learning a lot along the way.
Re-contacted the seller who would only agree to accept 50% of the original asking price, made me feel better anyway and thought it was a fair compromise considering the amount of time & effort involved on my part.

I don't think they'll work on a VMG1312-B10D as they have different hardware and firmware to the VMG1312-B10A.

That's correct, I have both models, my prior knowledge with my 1312-B10A was of no use applied to the 1312-B10D.
I achieved the desired results in the end but took a while as outlined in the link to previous post supplied earlier in this thread.

Yeah it resolutely will not go into any kind of firmware loading state - all the combinations of holding the reset button just have it boot as normal, damn thing.

So if you don’t know the supervisor password, and don’t want to get into serial cable antics then you’re stuffed?

Basically.  C'est la vie.  £18 - if I can my money back, so much the better.

I'll dig out my 8800NL and try to get to the bottom of it's lock-up issues.

Thanks for trying, everyone :)

For anyone finding this thread thought i'd add the solution i found. Reset the router by using the reset buttom method first. I then used the telnet command in windows, had to enable it in control panel first though. Start - Run - telnet 192.168.1.1 Then used a telnet command to find the username and password of the hardware. In this case it was Username:User , Password:User which then points to a password change utility, change the password and hello hardware menu.
