Title: ZyXEL ROM-D file save question
Post by: Weaver on March 08, 2020, 10:27:34 PM
I noticed the menu option "Configuration" > "ROM-D" tab : "Save configuration to ROM-D" in my ZyXEL VMG 1312-B10A modem (a menu item which is invisible unless you are logged in as "supervisor"; it’s not there if you log in as "admin", so that’s why I never saw it before). My question: is this useful if you are not an ISP?

The only real use I can see is when you are certain that you have a "perfect" configuration (whatever that may be) for the device, you could then save it to ROM-D.

Then at a later date, when some numpty has "fiddled" with the device configuration via the "admin" login, a long press of the reset button/switch will revert the device back to the factory default with the configuration stored in the ROM-D applied "on top".

If you have cleared the ROM-D, then does a long press have no effect?

The "long press" will always perform a reset to the factory defaults, regardless of the state of ROM-D.

With a cleared ROM-D, there is no customisation to be applied "on top" of the factory defaults. With a configuration stored in ROM-D, that will be applied "on top" of the factory defaults.

If I remember right this will preserve the root/supervisor password on a firmware reset if it was changed? potentially saving hassle on recovering it again.

I won't say "yes", emphatically, but thinking about the intended usage of the ROM-D -- for an ISP/CP's customisations -- I believe that would be the case. We really need somebody to experiment . . .  :-\
