Title: RJ11 - RJ45 super high quality short cables ?
Post by: Weaver on February 14, 2020, 09:21:27 AM
I’m after some short super high quality cables for DSL faceplate to modem; need RJ45 to RJ11 and BT431 to RJ11 as somehow I’ve ended up with a mixture of faceplates on my DSL wallsockets. I could get the excellent Tandy ones again, which I have used a lot before, but they are RJ11-RJ11, so not an absolutely perfect fit and RJ45-RJ11 would be better especially if I could get the same kind quality, although if really short then I’m not sure it matters that much?

Any tips for suppliers? I can get random eBay ones, but not sure about the quality.

If 1 metre is short enough, these guys have a good reputation. CW1308 twisted -

Hi

One idea is to make your own, it isn't too difficult, you could probably just use your existing cable, I guess it is the plugs that are problem.

Note that CW1308 if that is what is from that site run-it-direct is solid core cable, the RJ45/RJ11 connectors are typically made to connect to stranded cable, therefore the connection in the plugs is not likely to optimal and can cause a bad connection over time.

Given a metre distance or so, the cable isn't going to make much difference and we are in the realms of snake oil, if there is a difference it is often because the connectors are new and clean.  Gold plated plugs if connected to equipment that are not also gold plated or has the gold plate worn away causes corrosion between two different metals, over time this causes a poor connection.

Regards

Phil

Unfortunately he closed his eBay shop over a year ago, if I remember correctly, due to eBay taking a percentage of the delivery charges and other changes to the T&C for trading.

Patch cables should be flexible, hence the requirement for stranded core wires within.

I've noticed a lot of the cheap CAT6 cables off eBay are super stiff.  Not sure if its solid core cable or just a horrible sheathing.

I can see plenty if suitable cables that are very short on eBay but I’m not sure about the quality. Perhaps someone might comment if they have time? I’m going to get some random ones for now as it’s an emergency, having had one burned out - one failed after a delay after the strike - and then will replace the first one with one of the highest quality I can get and demote the first to be a spare

I was surprised that an RJ45 to RJ11 came with the Fritzbox from Zen (at least I think that is where it came from).  I recently plugged it in for my Plusnet line out of curiosity as the super short RJ11 cable I was using always seemed too loose in the MK3 socket which I was curious if it was contributing to the error rate.

My Zen line has the old ADSL Nation v1.0 socket which I believe is only RJ11 so a much firmer fit, I far prefer it to the MK3.

Alex I’m sure you’re right. I was using a Tandy cable with ADSL Nation faceplates but then I changed to Pressac ones for here as I felt they had the slight edge. But now I have zero filters as no telephones at all.

Burakkucat gave me some recommendations so I’m now sorted with a few spares ready for the next round of burn-out lightning incidents.

I'd like to use none at all on my Plusnet line, but then you'd need a BT to RJ11 cable and the only ones I'm aware of are what come with phones which are quite long and doubt they are twisted pair either.

You can buy these made from twisted pairs cable on ebay, the length is made for order.
