I installed the latest Windows XP updates today and was unable to connect to the internet afterwards. My firewall is Zone Alarms v7 and it was blocking all attempts to connect. Quick check on the internet via another computer showed that I was not alone. The offending update was KB 951748 uninstalling this enabled internet connection to be established. This is a recognised problem and Zone Alarm are said to be working on it.
Unfortunately KB 951748 seems to be an important update as it addresses DNS security problems.

That's pretty quick... how long would it have taken Microsoft to sort it?

There are several other firewalls available for people to change to but owners would not change from Windows to X Y or Z operating system because of a software conflict. So ZoneAlarm had to react very fast.
