Title: Modem chip got heatsink on it.

I opened my modem and i saw heat sink installed on it. With 2 thermal pads on 2 chips. Every modem has heat sink in it or not?

Not at all, it depends what chipset it uses and (unsurprisingly) how powerful it is.

The WiFi chipset will usually have an RF shield on it though and a modem/router combo with WiFi is more likely to have a faster CPU thus more likely to need a heatsink.

That's a pretty pathetic one to be honest (I can't see any fins), but I'm sure it does the job fine.

yes with two fins only and thermal pads are thick there were 2 broad com chips i think one under the heat sink and one without heat sink and it got some metallic tape on it

Having downloaded both images and zoomed-in on the relevant areas, I see --
The larger one, the BCM63381, is the SoC.

  • BCM43217TKMLC  (the smaller of the two)
  • BCM63381UKMMLG (the larger of the two)
The larger one, the BCM63381, is the processor chip.
heatsink was installed on two big chips with thermal pad of same size as chips. I hope i didn't mess the thermal pads by removing and installing them again and what is this ESMT chip? is it for lan?

I'm not sure of those sections of the markings. Could you use a magnifying glass for a closer look?

i am using the same modem right now for internet but i have original 3 4MB pictures with me i took earlier when i opened the modem  if you want i can send you

Perhaps other members may be familiar with those two Broadcom chips (or have the patience to perform a series of Google-searches) and will be able to assist.

And the modem/router is, I believe, a FibreHome HG150-UB.

wow here it says 2.4 and 5GHz but i only have 2.4 in my modem. Why is that?

Often WiFi chips support dual-bands, but they can only support one at a time.  If a router only has one implemented, its 2.4Ghz.

There's only really one reason why they do this, market segmentation.  As 2.4Ghz has better range and was more popular in the past, they choose to support the more common frequency and charge extra for dual-band models (where they have a radio for each).
