Title: Posting images on the web - again
Post by: Weaver on January 11, 2020, 10:47:52 AM
I want to post an image to a web server and get a URL of it, pointing directly to it, which I can write and give out to other people such as in my posts here. I have been using https://imgbb.com/ which works but it’s (1) very fiddly getting an address of (2) the actual image itself rather than the address of a page containing/surrounding the image; the greatest point of dissatisfaction with this service though is (3) the poor image quality - the images you get after uploading are rather small, can’t control the size, and the image quality is fuzzy and poor with text being shrunk and difficult to read because of its reduced size and slightly fuzzy pixels.

Can anyone suggest an alternative ? Ease of use is important but direct addressing is vital as is accurate image quality. Also control over the size/shrink-ratio if any would be nice.

I don’t often find myself sharing images or the likes but when I do, I tend to just upload to a Google drive and forward the shared links.

I’d probably be sharing an entire folder, but pretty sure you can also share individual file links too.  And they don’t interfere with file contents.

Surely the only issue is when you are wanting to show images to someone NOT on here as it's a doddle to post images (up to 300KB) on here.

@jelv : I always run up against the size limit. I would have to reduce the res somehow first ?

On Windows I'd strongly recommend https://www.irfanview.com/ - I've been using that for at least 10 years.

I’m looking for a web-based service. I want to upload from my iPad to a web server or cloud app service say.

Google photos (as it says at the bottom of the post).

Create an album and make it public. Put pictures in to there. Open one of the pictures. In Firefox I can then right click and Copy Image Location. That is a massive URL, e.g.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/nqNrH-z5Z3cGqB0gxR1THP2Pm7kb3Sa9Lao-UhfMcn7qRUlvELkekowjsmjR4NZQUcrXSND9N6XhoNdfJ7y6e27l3RBECXnBMNYN0VTVZmVabzR4S0FNZImw88tYgq0aC43JbQQUKgn3w8sIgji32rhMc3JLNXldtVBZKqDqEtnaZgAyx01xWsipJ2h9S0-beHC_7Q0ZCgtRUMy1XATb4bVG9lgqajaV-ixl7CSfFjddxxZWX2jA1Dp1T1rmiWEU3JLV-nU0Nyj0Bjbo2YX-dD9ZxkGdh7FbKU2lEvy3u_eJqWJ5SHp8TnZDuT9HMv2ajRvCatfqqJcmaEPQ219p_Xo3i0dIb2ytS-VU8SakqVagmQ7ZXYMIi-ZT6W3z8dSMnCrnrVnl64etBb8h9GhbMTpuXGhK0ZwGolLBP95A_c68DimAVKM2aosxzrH6OY0Nnb9Y6CZZgW2bXoEnRLOa8ALrGX5o2ep2oLv8vV4f6-b_7hhh0pZSNYo-3HG2ZowACWq5qfie-f48_ytJfx2dtEpJxYdM09Msfgr8MSiErmE2DkNJkUg3FpT7X6jS-pl32_gf70KWxxyWymlTua3_RNIVeVv0NX260zqFdcsioJDiT10Xpnfjz2Q7iSiZ6KBV5Urwg0EJFOAHecLT3bSJL2RPuoyZiCQ1EqHMoonCxC2kQJBZraDo2-4=w1235-h926-no

I have tried the Google Photos iOS app on my iPad, but I can’t find a url pointing to the image file itself, usual problem of only getting urls for pages that contain the image, so when I try to put an img link in a forum post it just fails. Same old story as with flickr

Flickr is easy, just use the website, click the share button, select the size, type of share and copy the link, adjust as required. Flickr shared images must link back to Flickr when clicked, its part of the T&C apparently.

I use Postimage, which is intended solely for sharing images. It provides links for all kinds of purposes, including forums of course, and there are no unnecessary restrictions. This is the thumbnail version:

Flickr is no good, tried that because it gives you a link to a page not to an image file, so the forum img tag enclosing won’t work - it won’t find an image embedded inside a simple html doc and display just the image. You can’t do that which roseway and jelv have achieved.

@roseway - I have taken a look at postimage, thanks!

Superb. I wonder what to do about image size. Can the forum resize the img window to fit in a certain defined box?

@Weaver, since it’s an iPad....

...Do you have iCloud photo storage enabled?   If so, as of iOS 12, I think a couple of screen taps will generate a link for sharing a photo from iCloud.

https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/icloud/mm93a9b98683/icloud

That page says the link can be used in messages or mail, but I can’t think of any reason it wouldn’t work on the forum too.    One point to note is the link expires after 30 days.   I’d rather that was optional.

Strange as Flickr from the website seems to work.  Just copied the BBCode provided:

Yes it can, and gives about a dozen size options, it's very easy to, you're just not doing it correctly.

I just tried the Android Flickr app, and it doesn't have a suitable share option for forums, so I doubt the Apple app will so this needs to be done from a browser.

Log in to Flickr
Find the picture you wish to share and click it, so its the only picture displayed
Down the bottom right you have 4 icons, edit, share, download, and buy.
Click the share button
Click BBCode (See attached)
From the drop down select the size (See attached)
Finally copy the code from the box.
Paste it directly in to your forum post, it is already formatted with IMG tags, I just remove the last URL as it makes things untidy.

I can confirm that the Flickr app on iOS 10 doesn't have a share option suitable for forums, but when logging on to Flickr with the Safari browser it does behave as Ronski says.

This is what I HATE about apps, so often its ten times harder or even impossible to do the same thing that the website does.

Facebook messenger is one I particularly hate.  I once spent half an hour trying to figure out how to send an image to a friend, got fed up and did it on the PC with a simple drag and drop.

It baffles me that so many people every day are fighting with apps when they could do the same things ten times faster just using a very basic PC.

Then you have the people who buy Macs to do something a Chromebook could do just as easily for a fraction of the price.

When you're so deep in the tech community, its easy to forget that most people not only do not know better, but also don't WANT to know.  But I've gotten awfully off topic now.

Perhaps I’ve got things wrong with Flickr or perhaps it has changed but all I could find when I looked into it was a link to a page not to an image.

I don’t have iCloud photo storage but Janet does, but the time limit rules it out for this application.

Weaver, you've got things wrong, Flickr is exactly the same as it was six months ago when I started using it.

Click a photo, look for the little arrow pointing right near to the basket and download icons in the bottom right, click it, click BBCode tab, copy the text.

Actually, having played around a bit more,  even aside from the expiry date, I’m not sure iCloud would have worked for you.   It generates a link OK, but I don’t think it’s compatible with [IMG][/IMG] formatting, so not much use for posting on forums.

[Moderator edited to fix what is shown for the "img" tags.]

Use the Safari browser to log into your Flickr account, and select the photo you want to refer to. Then you can click on the "share" icon, and BBcode should be one of the options offered - at least it is on my iPad running iOS 10.

It took several attempts to select the BBcode (probably because my iPad is horrendously slow), but here it is:

I use imgur now. I wouldn't recommend postimage. I did use it for a long time then all the links changed which lost me all my photos on numerous forums. I stuck with it for a while, then it happened again - so went with imgur. The nice thing with imgur are the modifiers by adding a letter at the end:

Here is the list of all the modifiers for dimensions (not all are always available)

    s = Small Square (90×90)
    b = Big Square (160×160)
    t = Small Thumbnail (160×160)
    m = Medium Thumbnail (320×320)
    l = Large Thumbnail (640×640)
    h = Huge Thumbnail (1024×1024)

Like this e.g. for huge

https://i.stack.imgur.com/nnnnnn.jpg

becomes

https://i.stack.imgur.com/nnnnnnh.jpg

Oddly enough, both those links yield this:

or is no longer available.

imgur.com

Was that your intention?
