Title: Calling AOL - TalkTalk users (and anyone else)
Post by: kitz on July 04, 2008, 08:23:18 PM
Ive been working on the Rate Your ISP (http://www.kitz.co.uk/isp/ISP_rate.php) system today.

Over the past few months Ive had more and more email enquiries from AOL users asking why they were showing up as being on TalkTalk.

The answer is

CarphoneWarehouse are moving more and more AOL users on to the TalkTalk platform.
Once on the TT platform you are assigned a TT IP address and therefore your connection will be automatically identified as TalkTalk  on the Internet.

When I was in the exchanges last month I observed that many AOL MSANs were being fed into the same backhaul as the TalkTalk MSANs  (See photo half way down this page under Fibre Optic backhaul (http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/telephone_exchange.htm) -  )

I have tried to look at a way in which the Compare ISP (http://www.kitz.co.uk/isp/ISP_rate.php) system could differentiate between theses 2 ISPs.  Unfortunately there isnt anyway it could be done automatically, so I have  coded a new module into the rating system which will identify lines possibly using TalkTalk via AOL and then ask the user to select which ISP they are with.

If you're with AOL or TT could you please test the new page and see if everything is working ok for you.

TIA

And if you're not on AOL/TT - a reminder to everyone else to rate their ISP this month please  ;D
