Title: ISP or Government Censorship
Post by: neil on December 09, 2019, 12:18:59 AM
Hi,
I have a issue of ISP censorship. Before it was easy just change DNS server and you are ready to go but now looks like ISP and country have upgraded their technology to block websites and stuff. Now even after changing DNS servers unable to surf internet without censorship. When i visit websites i get error like connection reset or unable to locate websites. I have tried google dns and cloudflare dns so far. I will really appreciate help in this regard.

But not available, I suspect, in Pakistan, neil's home country.

Is it ISP or  government (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_censorship_in_Pakistan) censorship? I wonder.

You ought to find a reputable VPN provider.

I was going to suggest a VPN, but then wondered if access to VPNs might also be blocked.

I'm not sure but I think some VPN providers will allow a short trial before the formal contract period begins?  :-\

here it is mentioned some DPI monitoring system from Canadian company
https://codastory.com/authoritarian-tech/surveillance/pakistan-nationwide-web-monitoring/
and looks like it has come online

My concern would be that if you find a VPN that is working today, there's no telling as to whether it might be blocked in the future. I'd be looking for either monthly contract, or a get out clause if it becomes blocked.

You can easily get a Digital Ocean cheap droplet, or a free (for 1yr) Google Compute instance to set up your own SSH tunnel and push all net traffic through it.
No way that Canadian company can see inside the tunnel.
You could even use it via port 80 if you wanted to really blend in...

And don't forget the easiest solution:

Maybe a VPS solution would work too. They are not sold as VPN as such, and I think they would likely fly under the radar. You could use that to tunnel traffic through too.

Windscribe offer a free service limited to 10Gig per month.  I think they may count both upload and download.   That would be worth a try, with a view to upgrading to their paid for service in due course.  Or only use it for your "sensitive" browsing, for which 10Gig may be enough.

https://windscribe.com/features/use-for-free

Note when they say "access to 10 countries" I think they're referring to the end-points you can break out at, rather than the countries your connection can originate from.

I certainly second trying underzone's recommendation of Opera's VPN first.

There's more info here
https://www.opera.com/features/free-vpn

I use it to read what seems an increasing amount of US news websites who deliberately block access from the EU, to avoid having to comply with GDPR.
You can select your virtual location from a choice of US, Europe or Asia.

They have asked to register your IPs and I dont know what not! You need to register yourself if you want to use VPN  :-X

look at this FAQ for VPN registration we are going to become like a China i guess. Our government getting inspiration from China

Are you using ISP DNS? sometimes just changing the DNS in use works perfectly.

Give vpn.ac or airvpn a try as their services work a treat in heavily censored countries, but use openvpn encryption - its almost bulletproof.

I'm on ZEN and they don't block anything  :P

You can use VPN the problem is some sites like learning membership sites won't allow VPN ip's because people use servers to scrape and pirate their content.

Just a quick reminder that neil is located in Pakistan, so what UK ISPs/CPs (do not) do is irrelevant.

one more update
now government body which is responsible for telecom.
has asked if you want to use VPN you need to register yourself.
now they can throttle or completely block VPN traffic.
I was using free VPN service and it was working fine but now it is blocked, it works for a sec and then zero traffic
the reason given by them "is to curb grey traffic" whatever that is
not long ago mobile game PUBG was blocked, now open
also some apps like tiktok was also blocked, now open after a week i think
