Title: Bargain Tower from Aria
Post by: Floydoid on July 03, 2008, 10:44:11 AM
This looks OK for a bargain basement tower replacement...

http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/Other+products/Arianet+Value+2800+Intel+PC+?productId=31975

2.8 GHz processor, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB h/d, ships without OS.

The only limitation I can spot is only 2 PCI slots on the mobo:

but looks decent enough if you're strapped for cash and want something to beef up a bit. :)

That's a pretty good deal, and a perfectly capable spec. Lots of motherboards only have two PCI slots, and with built-in sound, graphics and LAN a lot of people won't need to use them at all.

And to get the most out of it, why not install Linux, which won't cost you a bean? :linux:

I wouldnt really class that as a limitation - according to the specs it says

Internal slots are 1 x PCI Express x16, 1 x PCI Express x1, 2 x PCI,

I think most new mobos now have 2xPCI plus the 2 PCIe's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCIe), so it should be plenty.  If you do want to add a graphics card that would go in the PCIe x16 slot.

The processor to me seems a bit slow - but its more than adequate for general usage.
I wouldnt recommend putting Vista on it.. it could begin to stuggle with the HDD space and RAM.
But then again it does depend on what the heck do you expect from a machine that only costs around £100..  all in all a damn good buy for someone who doesnt need the additional power.  Some-one like my dad could quite happily live with that kind of spec.
