Title: Copper line test: really weird error message - line 2
Post by: Weaver on November 18, 2019, 12:56:47 PM
I did a copper line test on my line 2 and got the weirdest error message:

Today 12:15:48   BT Test xDSL Copper Test:Fail BTW exchange fault found.Fail BTW exchange fault found. T073:FAULT - Line Tested OK but No Dial Tone Detected

I don’t think I have seen that before. Any ideas?

Background: I had a creepy feeling about the performance of some lines, getting down / up events for no obvious reason and then downstream sync rate just dropped somewhat. A few of these and sync rates are:
Live sync rates:
  #1: down 3136 kbps, up 505 kbps
  #2: down 2902 kbps, up 519 kbps
  #3: down 3180 kbps, up 416 kbps
  #4: down 2960 kbps, up 528 kbps

I think that's a false alarm, BT tester getting confused on an A&A line with no calls allowed.   Ours gave that message, and A&A ended up switching it back to a normal time temporarily for that reason because OR kept redirecting any call to their exchange people.

In fact I've just found a discussion that I had with them on the very subject, their response ...

There is nothing to suggest there is an exchange fault, 'fail BTW exchange fault found' is a red herring, it basically means that the test could not draw dial tone from the exchange end. This is a know failure of the exchange test kit on older legacy line cards

I’ve never had that again. Weirdest thing. I understand that it’s a red herring; I wonder why then and not now? What conditions trigger it?

Do you mean it doesn't show that message if you do a copper line test now?  When we had a long running fault A&A had to set our line back almost into a normal line, specifically to avoid that false alarm appearing.  Otherwise they found OR kept re-assigning the fault to an exchange person.

@AESmith - no, it was a one-off. Have never seen it before, nor since.

Our line, so iirc Janet told me, has a recorded message playing on it which is RevK saying something that identifies the line.
