Title: Static IP set up / configuration
Post by: DrGadget on October 29, 2019, 07:44:54 PM
Hi all. Newbie here. Wish I'd found this resource years ago.

I wish to run my own servers, web / mail / data / production etc. I have been assigned 4 static IP addresses by my ISP.
Unfortunately they are unable to help in getting things set up / configured, which I think is very poor being as A) they offer/provide static IP's B) they offer much more technical services like managed services (voip, multi site networking etc).

So here is my question / request for help:

My current router is dynamic IP. What if any changes do I need to make to the router set-up?
When I configure my servers with the intended static IP, what subnet / dns do I use?
I'd also like to view websites on my local / internal network so I believe I'll need to configure NAT Loopback? How do I do this please?

What web server control panels can be recommended preferably a free one for Windows?

There are probably other things I'll need to know as I progress.

Thanks in advance and sorry if this has already been discussed / covered as I couldn't find it.

How much do you know about IPv4 and IPv6? Recommend Andrew Tanenbaum’s textbook (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Computer-Networks-Tanenbaum/dp/8131787575) as a decent introduction.

Weaver’s advice is good. :)
