Title: Email service provider
Post by: Weaver on July 26, 2019, 02:05:14 PM
Does anyone have experience of a good service provider that provides no-nonsense rock-solid email services ? Wish list: a very full feature set and all the right bells and whistles in respect of security nowadays. Obviously needs to be accessible anywhere from an access network.

I am wondering who might be a replacement for my much missed ‘Virtualnames / UK Servers’ who exists no more. I used them for about 18 years, I can’t remember exactly. I also used to use the US giant ‘Network Solutions/Verisign’ for email too and they were good.

Hi weaver

Many thanks for letting me know, much appreciated thank you

I guess that makes my offer a super offer, @£1 per month plus vat, cover hosting and email on 2Gb space. User decides how they want this set.

Also, as I looked into if our shared platform could do remote email collection from other providers, I realised that we could also add in full calendar/contact shares, using syncml, but then also we could go further, and let client use activesync, including full autosetup, which I will be completing a full how to on a technical forum I mod on

Anyway, sorry as I said I am not posting to sell, but always good to know what others offer for comparison

Many thanks

John

I've been using Johns email hosting for around 18 months, very pleased with it.

Hi

@ronski and jelv- thank you soo much for your posts

I am sorry, weaver is looking for ipv6, which we do not use currently on the shared platforms. It is not that the shared platforms are not ipv6 compliant, they are fully compliant

@weaver - our offer is fully open to kitz members should they wish to take the offer up and you are in full control over your domain, email etc... including spam filtering which you create your own rules on. If offer taken up, you can use all or part of the offer I.e email only, email and dns, all - as you receive all functionality for that domain.

However, this is a shared platform with no ipv6, so some restrictions are in place to protect other users of the platforms and we do not allow mass mail or spam mail sending.

Many thanks

John

I was lucky enough to bags a couple of Google Apps accounts  as it was then known, while they were free.   No regrets, an excellent service.

Of course, being Google, you have to kiss goodbye to privacy.   You have to assume that everything you send or receive will be retained for all eternity, as well as passed to governments and (albeit anonymised) sold to advertisers.   But actually, I suspect that happens on the whole internet, regardless of provider, privacy is a thing of the past.   :(

Google Apps is no longer free, in fact now known as G Suite, it quite costly.  But with above ‘privacy’ proviso, it is quite good... Google, for their faults, are indisputably competent.  And they do understand security too, as well as the best, again with above proviso.

Hi 7lm

We do not spy, retain or do anything with shared platform email. However, that is our side and cannot speak for other ESP.

We are however legally bound to respond/comply to any court order should any be obtained and presented/confirmed by the police.

All email is scanned for viruses, malware, spam (by SA), but this is scripts/hash and not read by humans.

The only time we may actually view email in any mailbox is with the owners consent whilst problem solving any issue they may report and we always advise password change once we have finished. All passwords are 1 way encrypted into MySQL so we have no way of decryption

Gmail does have issues on both incoming/outgoing/spam from time to time but most users do not realise. As an ESP we have greater in-depth knowledge and FBL in place, which helps all of us resolve issues quickly. eg I once helped VM resolve an ongoing issue with some of their scripts for email aa a result from our debug logs at our end.

I know you were not having a go at me, but just thought it better to have a greater understanding

Many thanks

John

No worries John, I wasn’t suggesting that other providers are on par with Google in terms of (lack of) privacy, Google are indeed in a class of their own.

Curiously, the only recurrent problem I have had with Google’s spam filters is, they have repeatedly flagged developer mail-shots from Apple, the arch enemy, as spam.   Accidental ::)

An amusing one-off was when I was setting up forwarding from one Google account to another.   Quite sensibly, that process involves an automated email to the ‘forwarded from’ address, to make sure the owner really wants it to be forwarded.  I’ve done that many times and it always worked excepting just once, the confirmation email never arrived.  Google had flagged their own auto-generated mail as spam. :D
