Title: Beach boys
Post by: Weaver on July 17, 2019, 07:36:20 PM
When my wife came home yesterday evening, the Beach Boys’ "Good Vibrations" was blaring out at full blast. It seems the Apple Homepod speaker is vulnerable even to the brush of a cat’s tail, but how the cat’s musical choice works is as yet unknown.

Raises the possibly of an even more alarming concern... I think you said you have an Apple TV.   I wonder, what movies might they have rented in your absence?  Can’t remember if it was Netflix or Apple, but I think I once found a boxed set of “Top Cat” cartoons, and it far from cheap. :o

I think I’d be checking my iTunes purchase history, for music, TV, and maybe even Apps, to see if there’s an unexpected slant towards titles of feline interest.  ::)

No upright can possibly understand the workings of a feline mind.  :D

I do have an Apple TV. I shall be on the lookout for purchases of eg ‘Catwoman’ (a Golden Raspberry winner iirc), ‘Cat People’, ‘Out of Africa’, ‘Mouse Hunt’, ‘Cats’, ‘A Street Cat Named Bob’, ‘Cat Run’, ‘The Cat from Outer Space’, ‘Milk’, ‘Of Mice and Men’, ‘The Taming of the Shrew’, ‘Vole, Vole Tristesse’, ‘Vole Mon Amour’ etc etc

Cats move in mysterious ways, their wonders to perform.   :cool:

At least, thanks to Weaver's list, I now have some ideas for something to watch myself this weekend.  :D

I don’t understand why Apple has to make the interface so slack. There has to be some bad bug here. Apple needs to hire some cats as beta testers.

As an aside, twice my cats have switched on my music centre.   Scares the death out of me when the radio starts blaring to itself downstairs in the middle of the night.  It's touch sensitive and I think madam triggers it with her tail when walking across the sideboard.  She probably feels safe to explore on there at night as she'd be told to get down if it were during the day.

Beileag has always delighted in being naughty and her aim in the past has been to do things that she knows will drive me mad. She always used to claw the chair in the bedroom and then look at me for a reaction. I would immediately tick her off, which made her do it all the more, and finally a cushion would come flying her way, so that she was satisfied. Now since we lost Orange, Beileag’s boyfriend at the age of nineteen, she has, for reasons quite unknown, completely given up being evil with one very minor exception. Sometimes in the middle of the night she turns on the bedside lamp by Janet by touching it with her nose - it is of the touch-sensitive type. She will then turn it off again and repeat ad infinitum. I’m not 100% sure but I think it’s because she wants something to eat, and is in fact not done out of devilment at all, so if this is correct, she is a reformed character, just very intelligent. There is a little dish containing cat crunchiest near Janet’s bedside table so that is why I think that it is a hint from Beileag to Janet.

Haha I think you may be right that she's doing it for attention or food.   One of mine comes up and pats me on the mouth when he wants food and he will pat me on the arm when he wants a cuddle.  He can be very insistent about both of these actions.   If I ignore the pats on my mouth, he will then start licking my nose (which he knows I hate).   If I ignore the pats on my arm (or if I'm asleep) he will physically hook my arm with his front leg to move it.

I don't for one minute think cats are as dumb as some people believe. They are quite capable of learning and performing tricks - only difference is it's only if they want to or it's for their benefit.  :D

There was a newspaper article recently which reported on one of those studies by some university's Faculty of the Bleedin' Obvious.
It concluded that cats understand language as much as dogs do, but only respond if and when they feel so inclined, which they usually don't.
Who knew?  ::)

Main trick my own cat had was of her own making, involving a pink toy mouse she’d had since she was a kitten.

I generally kept my bedroom door shut but every morning, as long as she lived, pink mouse was left outside the door.    I started being mean, and hiding pink mouse when she wasn’t looking, to see what happened.  But no matter how hard I tried to hide it, and with no sign of distress from the cat it would be back next morning, in its usual place.

Once when preparing to move house, and the place was full of cardboard packing cartons, I was particularly mean.  I put pink mouse inside a small carton and folded over the flaps.   Then I put the small carton inside a bigger one, folding over and interlocking the flaps.   Next morning it was, of course, outside the door.   Both cartons’ lids neatly unfolded, with no collateral disturbance.   Istr she did look a little smug, but she probably tried not to show it. ::)

We once had two male (modified) cats, Arthur and Tigger. They were acquired at different times, and got on OK with each other - no great affection, but no hostility either. Tigger was never a great one for cuddly toys, but Arthur always slept with a particular favourite.

When Arthur died, Tigger displayed cool equanimity, except that over the course of about a week, he slept with Arthur's toy, washing it with great care - presumably until all traces of Arthur's smell had gone.

@7LM  That sure is one clever kitteh.

I've seen several reports over the past few years which suggest that the cat may actually have a better sense of smell than dogs.  - eg linky (https://www.news.com.au/technology/science/animals/could-cats-replace-searchandrescue-dogs-if-we-can-motivate-them/news-story/57b549f5a2f77399485412c696fdb84b)...   but as you can see, the problem is getting them to want to do it.

Same with the mirror test which used to test for self recognition and intelligence.  I really am not sure what to make of that.  Cats do obviously see in mirrors, the first time they encounter will they will assume it is another cat and you do see kittens playing with their reflection.   After a while though they just ignore 'the other cat'.
But how many cat owners will actually say that they do see their cat looking at the mirror.   Many a time if I've been sat at the dressing table doing my make up only to realise they are led on the bed behind but giving me direct eye contact so I am certain that to some extent they understand some basic concept of reflection..  but just have no interest in being vain nor caring if there is a red spot on their face.

@4candles...  aww how cute <3

Another weird thing about my own cat companion.

As a cat-caring person, when walking into town, I never hesitated to engage other suburban cats, should they present themselves for stroking or ‘conversation’ ( :)).   But after mine passed away, those other cats generally stopped presenting themselves to me, and some that had previously been friendly would sometimes even scamper if I tried to say hello.    :(

Always wondered, is that because I no longer smelled of cat?   I might be unusual in that observation as I only ever had the one cat.
