Is anyone else getting a stream of spam emails offering 'exceptional investment opportunity' in various northern towns/cities? Each one is from a different domain (last few I've checked are registered with namecheap).

Yes I've had one yesterday and one today, I'm sure I had some a while ago as well.
In fact that's the one I've just deleted, mine was from Western Cape property.

I only see these when I clear out my spamlog, none get through from the server as emails.

Yes, me too, have had quite a few now. Interestingly on an email address that I very rarely use, not sure where they got hold of it from.

Perhaps they are using email addresses that are in various databases floating around in the internet that resulted from break-ins obtaining a massive load of personal info. I have a tool (an iOS app which) can search for info in such breach files. I note the website https://haveibeenpwned.com - don’t know if this is genuine / worthwhile or not and I would be interested in comments.

Yes, that site is genuine but I had forgotten about it. It confirms what I suspected, that the breach was Adobe where I used the address in 2010 and really the only possible candidate as the only other use of the address was the Charity Commission!!

I didn’t know whether that website was kosher or not, so I tried a very crude test, of putting in some email addresses that definitely have never been used and the system did come back with the expected answers, so it appears that there is a chance that it is doing something useful.

https://haveibeenpwned.com/ is a well respected and trusted resource that's been running for years.
Don't worry about entering your favourite email address in to it. It's not the type of site that will store the email address and sell it on.

When I went to click on it, Malwarebytes told me that the site had a Trojan embedded within it, and promptly blocked me :fingers:
As it only affects the other half's email, I will have to keep a careful eye on it.

I have recently found that very few scanners pick up email attacks these days. One that was obviously an attack was passed as ‘clean’ by malwarebytes, and online scans by kaspersky, Norton, among others. Simply extracting strings containing URLs from the attachment on the other hand, yielded well-documented phishing sites. :(
By all means use an AV, but never depend upon it. If an email is unsolicited and/or the slightest bit dodgy, it is almost certainly malicious, no matter what your AV may say. :)

I’m feeling left out, never received one. :(
I have noticed though, my Gmail spam folder is full of blackmails, all similar, claiming they know about nasty habits and specifying my ancient, leaked, linkedin password as “proof” that they have hacked my account. :o
That one has been mentioned before, and I think I complained about feeling ‘left out’ then as well. :D

I've also had loads of property investment emails, and multiple emails stating they have webcam footage, also quoting an old password.
I just delete them.
