I’m about to drop my second broadband service. Having virtually retired and definitely not needing 2 circuits. I still need the phone line, any suggestions for decent provider that might be cheaper than Plusnet £18.99 ?
-
If it's mainly for incoming calls than BT's offer of 11.99 for non broadband lines is hard to beat.
If you need to make some phone calls than consider https://pulse8broadband.co.uk/line-rental or https://www.uno.uk/packages/phone-line-rental/

I'm not too sure but have a vague idea that Pulse8 (https://pulse8broadband.co.uk/) may be able to provide a low cost telephony service . . . :-\
-
A fully unbundled line with a well known mpf provider without broadband enabled could be got for as little as £10 a month including VAT.
I'm surprised none of the above mentioned providers can get anywhere near this figure. :-\

Thanks for suggestions @meritez can you give a bit more info like a link perhaps ?

Thanks for commenting. I’ve gone with Pulse8 £14:50 phone only no contract or migration fee. Call charges in line with most operators and no call setup fee.
FYI UNO don’t do phone only unless it’s a second line.
Not many others to chose from BT dearest at £19.99.

CIX is £13 per month (inc VAT) and local call rates are 1.2p per minute with mobile generally being 6p per minute. You also have a nice control panel to manage the phone line with, as well as to test and/or report faults, so it's not necessary to ring through to some call center either in this country or abroad.

Thanks @Ixel I will look at that as I haven’t placed order yet !

BT can be £11.99 if they don't know you have a broadband line (https://www.ofcom.org.uk/about-ofcom/latest/media/media-releases/2018/bills-cut-for-bt-landline-only-customers).
The Post Office also offer a line only deal from £13/month

Thanks also for that tip. However running into some difficult issues. Providers I’ve spoken to so far advise the ADSL must be removed before they take over the line. I also seem to recall that having 2 “jobs” on an OR line at once can cause issues, potentially even a full cease.
Unfortunately Plusnet won’t cease the ADSL, as they don’t offer line only, even to cover a cutover. It seems I need to migrate both and then cancel the ADSL with the new provider, likely with 1 months notice.
-
Can't you transfer the phone and then cancel the Plusnet ADSL when the phone transfer has completed?
CIX and Pulse8 look to be pretty much on a par - Pulse8 probably preferable if a higher proportion of outgoing calls to landlines are in the evening.
-
Not sure I will have to ask them !

Not really, as I'm not going to advertise the business only communications provider I work for... :-X
Anyway, other companies:
Freeola are offering £10.99 a month for a BT Wholesale line > https://freeola.com/line-rental/
No calls outgoing except freephone and emergency, plus there is a £16.99 + VAT transfer fee, and they give free caller id, probably because of the OFCOM ruling from October 2018 that Caller ID should be free.
ITalk are £13.33 a month, with calls at 8.5 ppm, https://www.italktelecom.co.uk/phone-only though the page states it's a 24 month contract.
Cloudscape Connect charge £12.50 a month, throw in a free line transfer, and calls to landlines for 2p per minute, https://www.cloudscapeconnect.com/phones/

You could also consider something like Vonage. They allow you to port your existing number to them.
https://www.vonage.co.uk/home/how-vonage-works/keep-existing-phone-number/
That way you can get rid of the copper entirely.

Since VOIP was mentioned, SIPGATE charges no line rental, and call charges for normal landlines calls are 1.19 Pence per minute. You need to buy your ATA box though...........

Thanks for all the input. Given all the various options I’ve actually gone for pulse8
