Title: Best modern alternative to HG612?
Post by: markdeacon on February 24, 2019, 06:07:07 PM
Hello,

My first post, been a reader for years so firstly to say thanks for all the useful information on the Kitz website and forums.

I currently have a unlocked HG612 which is perfectly fine and works well as a VDSL modem to connect my Ubiquity USG to my FTTC connection. If I ever decided to replace it with something more modern and supported (future firmware etc) what are the recommended alternatives?

I 'm on a Huawei cabinet and get 60/20 sync speed with a very small interleave on the downstream (4 as reported in DSLstats).

Is there currently anything better out there for use on a Huawei cabiniet or is the HG612 still the gold standard?

Thanks again,

Mark

Welcome to the Kitz forum . . . as a contributor.  :)

As you have implied, the Huawei HG612 is now ageing gracefully and can be bettered.

I gather that you will be content to continue with a separate device acting as a modem and providing the local end-point for the Openreach tagged VLAN (101).

The unit of choice is, undoubtedly, one of the ZyXEL VMGnnnn-B10x devices. I shall mention two in particular --
I'm sure other member will be along shortly, to expand and enhance my initial list.

Not really, as you've mentioned the 2 obvious choices when looking for a modem only replacement. :)

Thanks for the replies.

Are they as good as the HG612 in terms of sync speed and errors?

I've had issues in the past on my line caused by the Vodafone Hub and a DrayTek, they caused enough errors for me to get pretty bad interleaving.

Both Zyxels mentioned have a newer/better DSL chipset. They also have an additional common mode noise filter inside.
The general consensus and certainly my experience is they sync higher with lower errors

They sync higher on the downstream over the HG612 in every example I've seen (dozens).
On the occasional line the upstream is a little lower than the HG612, but for the majority it's higher.

I highly recommend the VMG1312-B10A for use in bridge mode. It's basically a black HG612 in shape/style.
The VMG8x24-B10A's perform very similar but have a different shape/style.

Note the A in bold on the model numbers above. The D variants are inferior models.

The posts above certainly reflect most peoples experiences, but one or two folk including me, find the HG612 much better for lower errors.  On my line other modem/router modems give between 3 and 5 times more errors.  The extra errors seem to arise from odd spikes a few times a day.  So you probably can't be 100% that a newer device will be better.
