Title: G.Fast Modem
Post by: Weggy on December 21, 2018, 05:54:10 PM
Hi,

I recently upgraded to BTs ultrafast service of 100Mb+.

However my previous setup of a Huawei HG612 + Asus RT-AC5300 doesn't appear to function anymore, more specfically the HG612 modem.

So what I need to do is purchase a G.fast modem like the Huawei MT992 so I can get my router back in action and ditch this Ultrafast BT Home Hub I'm currently using. Could anyone help me with what modem to get? I don't want to splash out much on a modem, so basic function would be a winner.

Many Thanks

You are the second person, within the last couple of weeks, to ask that question. The ideal for you would be a Huawei MT992 . . . Unfortunately only one has been seen, so far, on eBay at a very inflated price. Perhaps keep a look out for an Openreach technician and do a trade -- bacon sandwiches for a MT992.  :-\

There are other devices which are G.Fast capable; one is by Asus. I don't recall the actual model, so perhaps other members will be able to assist?

If you're determined to get a standalone g.fast modem and can't find a MT992 on ebay, then consider buying a Zisa G100/G1000 from Ali Baba. They're around $55 and very similar to the MT992 (the Zisa's also use a BCM chipset).

Can I just point out that when having BT Ultrafast installed the Openreach engineers are usually more than happy to issue you with a MT992 as part of the install.
They usually have them on the van as they install for all ISPs & some non-BT installations still use the old (non-G.Fast) ISP issued routers via the MT992 modem.
But as the saying goes: if you don't ask you don't get.

Dreytek also have one coming https://www.amazon.de/v165-B-DACH-Vigor-Supervectoring-Annex-B-at-CH/dp/B07KM8LH5X

I think only the 166 variant will be g.fast based on the PDF.

I emailed about it last week and got this:

Quote
We don't currently have a confirmed date for release, but we expect it to be in Q1 in 2019.
Its likely to support g.fast, but we'll confirm that before release.

@smallal I asked for the modem but the guy left the wrong one so been stuck with using the ultra hub.

The DrayTek 2866 will support G.Fast.
I'm not aware of any other models that will, or they are keeping it a secret.

The model linked on Amazon above only does VDSL2 Profile 35b.

What PDF are you referring to?

I just got G.Fast and am struggling with there being no bridge mode option on the SmartHub modem provided. I have my own pfsense router and 3 unifi AP's around the house. Double NAT is causing issues with pfsense. The thought of disabling pfsense NAT and trying to do it with the BT Router doesn't sit comfortable with me.

I've started to create a spreadsheet of all G.Fast Modems and availability. It's not good, the only one I can find available right now is the ASUS DSL-AC88U.

I contacted a Zisa on Alibaba to buy the MT992/Zisa G100, but they are out of stock for 3-6 months. He said they have to wait till an ISP puts in a big order of about 5000 modems, then they can add our little orders to it. But he said they do have in stock the Zisa G800 modem/router which is currently being supplied by a Swiss ISP. Specification here (https://www.dropbox.com/s/0mgyekel3rg2bf9/ZISA%20G800-AC%20datasheet%20EN.pdf?dl=1). Only problem is I'd have to buy 10 and sell on the remainder.

I know I won't be the only one with this issue so am happy to try to sell on 9, but I'm not sure if this is what people want. Personally I just want a simple small cheap but reliable modem, I don't need the router part. Also to make it worth the effort I'd probably have to buy more than 10. I doubt people would want to pay close to £200 for this router/modem once shipping/VAT is added.

My current thoughts are to just buy the ASUS and wait for these modems below to actually become available. I am also going to call BT today and see if they will swap their Smart Hub for a business one which I've read elsewhere does have the bridging modem option, but I don't have much hope they will agree to that.

I'd be interested on your thoughts on the spec of the Zisa G800 and whether it is worth importing it.

This is a work in progress below just to record my research. I'm not sure if the bottom ones are compatible, but saw them mentioned on the Swisscom web site.

That's what I ended buying. Massive beast, totally overkill, but the only option at the moment.

I spoke to one of the openreach engineers about buying one from him. He said he had loads in his van, but he showed me his tablet with the work order on it, it actually says provide modem yes/no. I offered him £100, but he said he was worried it would come back to him and he'd get in trouble. Can't blame him really, I'd do the same.

@re0

My brand new ZyXEL XMG3927-B50A are coming to my house tomorrow all thanks to Shaun from A&A ISP after pay it by my debit card. But, they told me they will not support to set it up for me for G.fast service unless I order the service from them. But, I told him that I will use this new router for FTTC for now until my contract has expired in October with PN. Then will order G.fast with Zen Internet and will use this new ZyXEL XMG3927-B50A for G.fast.

But until later, I might need you (re0) to help me what the correct settings for FTTC & G.fast like PTM, VPI, VCI, Encapsulation, VLAN ID etc and where to put username / password from ISP for broadband account.

Should be pretty straight forward. If I remember correctly, the device was relaitvely simple to setup.

For stuff like VLAN ID, encapsulation, etc.:
Plusnet (https://www.plus.net/help/broadband/broadband-connection-settings/#what-settings-should-i-use-for-fibre-broadband)
Zen (https://support.zen.co.uk/kb/Knowledgebase/ZyXEL-VMG8924-Fibre-Optic-VDSL-Broadband-Setup) (guide for ZyXEL VMG8924, but the same principle; MTU 1500 bytes possible)

To be fair the ASUS DSL-AC88U has been around for ages now, but I avoided it due to the initial high cost & it's buggy firmware.
I borrowed one a while back, but no matter what settings I entered or what firmware version I ran I couldn't get multicast to work with BT TV.
It seemed to be a bandwidth problem, SD feeds ok, HD feeds stuttered & UHD pictures were just a green mess, all worked fine using BT's router.
I think many manufacturers think G.Fast is a bit of a damp squib so they are looking to FTTP as the next big thing, skipping releasing G.Fast models altogether.
