Title: Off switch for the internet, in Hollywood
Post by: Weaver on December 06, 2018, 10:20:59 AM
Just watched an episode of the science fiction series ‘Salvation’ where the President of the US turns the internet off. She enters an authorisation code into a magic box. This disables the DNS root servers so it points out. A lot of circles showing on a map of the USA all then shrink to nothing and the internet is then dead. Someone at another location then says ‘I’ve got no signal’.

 :(

I’m speechless really.

That is probably from where Tronald Dump gets some of his ideas.  ::)

Sounds a bit like a memorable scene for UK Sitcom The IT Crowd, where Jen gets tricked into believing the internet is a tin box.    :)

I’m with Burakkucat. I suspect that Rump is ready to ask for the off-switch if the internet continues to be nasty to him.

I watched that as well, at a later point in the episode or it may have been the next episode one of the characters did say that if they knew the IP address they could access the equipment they were trying to access.

Also given in the series they have the power to turn off the internet they also over looked this fact later in the series when it would have helped them  ::)

ETA: TV/Films is full of inaccuracy's like this, there is a James Bond film where Bond disconnects the the red air line on an articulated truck, thus in the film stopping the brakes from working  In real life the red airline being disconnected would instantly apply the trailer brakes, however disconnecting the yellow air line would have had the effect they intended albeit only the trailer brakes wouldn't have worked, unless it had EBS then they would still work  ;D
