Reading the story it looks like this happened before Marriott bought Starwood, which is where the breach happened. I'd be very annoyed if I was Marriott, unless they knew about the breach before the deal in 2016.

It does, but I doubt they would have known about it before they purchased.   Even so it's taken another 2 yrs before they discovered the breach. :/

I find it increasingly hard to keep track of who’s who in the hotel industry.

My first reaction to the (empty) “breaking news” headline was..

“Oh dear, pretty sure I have used Marriots.” :(
Then as the story unfolded...
“Oh good, I have never heard of Starwood.” :)
And then as the details came out
“Ah, so Sheraton might be a problem then...” ???

Hard to know which way’s up sometimes. :D

From what I heard on the news last night Marriots own hotels use a different booking system and was unaffected. It was the groups other brands that were affected.
