Title: Problem Unlocking HG612 Time out issue
Post by: mikey6283 on November 07, 2018, 03:08:21 PM
 Hi,
I have been reading up the topic of unlocking the HG612 with the Software update.  I have followed the instruction and i am able to get to item 9-12 where the software fails to update due to time out issues  Ip address not available . Then I have to Reset to get back to the upgrade page. I do not have a firewall or antivirus or proxies servers on. using windows 10.

Any advise would be helpful.

 Thanks

Welcome to the Kitz forum and sorry for the delay in responding.  :)

I am unsure to what you refer with "item 9-12". I have checked the guide (https://kitz.co.uk/routers/hg612hacking.htm), available on the main site, and am still uncertain. Would you please provide a link to the guide that you are using? Sight of that will certainly help me understand your problem.

HI Burakkucat.

I have been following the guide in the link you have highlighted and downloaded  the softwarebcm96368MVWG_fs_kernel_HG612V100R001C01B030SP08_webgui. When I reset the Modem i can get to the web page  where it  start to load the software , however after a minute or so it stops and the page comes up stating that the page 192.168.1.1  cannot be reached and refused to connect, and saying  Try checking the connection and proxy and Firewall. These are  turned off  on a windows 10 PC. If i try to go  to the  192.168.1.1 i have to rest the modem again  this can take a few attempts.  The only items connected to the modem is the power cable and Lan2 cable to PC. Lan adapter is set as 192.168.1.200.

 Any advise would be appreciated.

Hmm . . . That is odd. I wonder if the messages that are being displayed are misleading you?

Start by disconnecting the Ethernet patch lead and then power-cycle the HG612. Leave the HG612 alone for a few minutes, then press the reset button and hold it for 15 - 20 seconds. Once you have released the reset button, allow the device to remain powered up for, say, five minutes.

Power off the HG612 and reconnect the Ethernet patch cable to the LAN2 port. With the reset button held depressed, power on the HG612. Continue to keep the reset button depressed. After 20 - 30 seconds, release the button and then point your web-browser to the 192.168.1.1 IPv4 address.

The firmware upload page should now be displayed. Specify the the firmware image and and left-click on the upload button. At this point, do not disturb the HG612 or your computer. Ignore any messages that are subsequently displayed that the page at IPv4 192.168.1.1 cannot be reached. They are originating from your web-browser and can be disregarded. It is very important not to disturb the HG612 at this point, for it will be checking the image that has just been uploaded. I will suggest waiting, once again, for five minutes. During that time, if you are keeping a close watch on the LEDs, you will see that the HG612 re-boots itself. Once it has re-stabilised, it will then be using the newly uploaded firmware image.

It is important to allow the device time to perform its internal housekeeping tasks . . . if it is interrupted, the uploaded firmware will be deleted. Hence the advice is to wait up to five minutes at each crucial point.

Burakkcut,

Thank for you advice it worked perfectly, i believe my problems , when i saw the error no internet , i assumed there was a problem , when i left it alone , it when to the admin page as you suggested.

Now i just need to learn and understand the other elements of the unlocking.  Once i had connected everything up to my computer ( Imac) i tried to go into  Admin 192.168.1.1, I assume that I should  set the Ethernet Lan as DHCP with manual address 192.168.1.200 ?

If there are any thread which would help please advise and thanks again for helping me to get this far. :)

You need to tell us how you wish to use the HG612 before we can tell you how it needs configured.

Is it for a VDSL2 (FTTC) service, or ADSL?
Do you plan on using it as a modem with a separate router?

The HG612 is pre configured as a modem for FTTC, with no config changes being needed for this.

I am a complete novice just willing to learn.  I don't think i am on VDSL2(FTTC)  as maximum download i can get is  28-31Mbps rubbish really.

I am currently using the modem before my Airport Time Capsule , the reason  i updated i the modem as i wanted to see  if and why i keep on getting drops in my connection, i understand i could tell by the upgrade? I cannot get into the admin page at the moment ?
My current configuration is Lan 1 to Airport to iMac. Lan 2 not used. Do i have to connect to Lan 2 and another computer to read the information ?

You need to connect LAN2 of the HG612 to any LAN port on the Airport Time Capsule for reading stats.

No other changes are needed.

You are indeed on FTTC.

edit: I'll add with some routers you can drop the requirement of a 2nd cable for LAN2, so that stats can be viewed over LAN1, but it needs advanced routing features and I have no experience of the ATC.

Connected Lan 2 to Airport Time Capsule and  I receive error as though the Modem Not available. Tried Lan 2 direct to computer same as used when unlocking the HG612 changed ethernet to 192.168.1.1,  with the same result.  On my imac i am able to have DHCP with manual  address , should i change this accordingly ?

I cannot understand why the modem is not  available.

 Any advice would be appreciated

To access the modem stats without any clever routing modifications you need 2 ethernet cables between the router and the modem.

Leave the existing LAN1 connection in place, this provide the WAN connection to the modem then add another cable from LAN2 to your local ethernet LAN.

LAN2 does not provide any connection to the internet but allows the modem to be configured and the status pages viewed.

However the stats provided by the modem web interface are incorrect, you have to use a Telnet connection and login to the modem.
Username and Password 'admin' then enter 'sh' and the command 'xdslcmd info --stats'
This is a useful command that displays connection information and error counts but there are many other commands available.

RealaleMadrid

Thanks for the reply, i have as you suggested two ethernet cable in Lan1 and Lan2 , however when i try to access the modem thru browser  error 192.168.1.1 not reachable. If i connect Lan2 direct to computer and change the to manual ip address no problem i can enter modem admin.  I am running the modem to an Apple Airport Time capsule. I  believe this may be my problem as i think that the connection in the Airport is not recognising the ip address. As my router ip address are 10.0.1 xxx. Even when i scan for ip address the modem is not in the list only my Airport. I hope that this makes sense?

I understand that i need to use Telnet when i can access  thru the modem.

Have you set up the Time Capsule with the Airport Utility to act as a router? You will need to setup the WAN side in the Internet tab (PPPoE giving your ISP credentials) and set the local LAN in the Network tab (Router Mode = DHCP and NAT).

You need to make the subnets match. Either the IP on the modem needs changing to 10.0.1.xxx or the Airport needs reconfiguring to use the 192.168.1.xxx subnet.

Hi All

I am afraid  the set up has got me beat, I looked at get the HG612  modem 192.18.1.1( sub 255.255.255.0) and the ATC on the same  subnet , howe i see that the subnet for the iPV4 address is the  ip address for connection to BT server  ( 255.255.255.255). Lan address is now 192.168.1.1 as i changed the DHCP range to 192 ( rightly or wrongly)  but  internet and connection work perfectly.

Vic0239 my Router is set up exactly as you have suggested.
Jelv  I cannot find away to  change the subnet  on my ATC to be same as modem as i said it has the BT server address subnet. I know this address is the BT server as this is the one i check the speeds thru Ola ?

The only way that i can connect to the HG612  is  Lan2 after i have  changed to ethernet adaptor to manual with 192.168.1.100. I was wondering if i should  make any changes on the modem it self?

If i cannot connect thru ATC/router  I am unable to use Telnet? I suppose the only other option is to ditch the ATC and get another router and hard drive ?

Thanks for all your help and advise as i am at a loss now.

Would it not be easier to simply change the config on the HG612 to match the subnet you use elsewhere?

I would if i could figure out how to do it in the HG612 as it would not allow me to change 0 to 255 in 255.255.255.0. My Airport T C/ Router will not allow me to change subnet either as this is the subnet from BT.

If anyone else uses Apple product perhaps they could advise Apple Community forum, i don't get any response.

The subnet mask (255.255.255.0) is a red herring.
Leave this as is on the HG612.

Follow jelvs advice and it should work.

On the HG612:
Connect your PC direct to LAN2 on the HG612
Set the IP on your PC to 192.168.1.100  OK ethernet
Open the modem UI using http://192.168 (http://192.168).1.1 OK
On the left select Basic then LAN (1 then 2 in screenshot) OK
In the LAN Host Settings change the IP address (3 in screenshot) from 192.168.1.1 to 10.0.1.1 (make sure you get this right or you will not be able to access the modem afterwards - it would probably need a factory reset) OK
Click submit - you will lose the connection to the modem Didn't loose connection
Change the IP of your PC to 10.0.1.100 and you will be able to access the modem again to confirm access Changed PC to 10.0.1.100  i was able to access admin using  10.0.1.1  after i have changed PC ethernet  to o see screenshot
Now set the IP of your PC back to normal (probably automatic) When I set it back to DHCP IP changes to 10.0.1.3 see screen shot.
Connect LAN2 to a LAN port on the Airport and LAN1 to it's WAN port. Connected cable .Connected  but i still cannot access Admin modem on Lan 2 see screenshot

I am not sure where i am going wrong.

After you changed the modems IP you said you didn't lose the connection. Did you try refreshing the page or clicking one of the other links?

What's the IP address of the Airport and can you see the DHCP range? Have you any other devices which have an IP of 10.0.1.1?

I really appreciate your help and  replies & advice

I just logged out of the modem. the DHCP range is 10.0.1.2 - 10.0.1.200

I did a Ip scan, please see attached screenshot it show that the Airport Time capsule is 10.0.1.1, iMac 10.0.1.3 perhaps  i should change ATC to 10.0.1.4 ?

 Thanks again

Hi

I would just change hg612 to 10.0.1.254. Leave everything else as is and you would access hg612 via http://10.0.1.254

As both ATC and hg612 are using 10.0.1.1, you will need to turn off ATC and hardwire your connection to 10.0.1.xxx subnet 255.255.255.0 then reset hg612, then reset your network back to DHCP, so it is assigned its range from 10.0.1.xxx and you should be able to access ATC by 10.0.1.1 and hg612 by 10.0.1.254

That is assuming you do not have any device using 10.0.1.254 already. If you do change 10.0.1.254 to a different IP in that range you know is not used

Many thanks

John

the Airport Time capsule is 10.0.1.1

That explains it! We should have asked you for the ATC's IP address before.  :-[

I concur with John, using the procedure I gave before change the IP address of the HG612 to 10.0.1.254. Using 254 will take it out of the DHCP range (using a number in the DHCP range could cause other issues).

Doing it that way is far simpler than messing about with the ATC settings which I think would also need you to adjust the DHCP range. Also if any of your devices were not using automatic settings you'd need to change the gateway address in their configuration. As it's only the modem that you are having issues with, change that and leave everything else well alone.

Hi mikey

Changing the hg612 IP address to 10.0.1.254 would not brick it

The worse case is you cannot cannot connect

A hard reset simply means you have to start from the very beginning

Are you sure you changed the hg612 to .254 and not the ATC

Can you open xterminal and ping 10.0.1.1 and then 10.0.1.254

10.0.1.254 though if hg612 hard reset should not ping but 10.0.1.1 should ping been the ATC

So I would unplug the hg612 from network, check your ATC is pingable and useable on 10.0.1.1 and everything works as expected. Then start from a fresh flashing the hg612 as previous and using jelv instructions to set the hg612 to 10.0.1.254 before you plug the hg612 into your network. Only plug the hg612 into your network when you have correctly set it to 10.0.1.254 and tested login to it

Many thanks

John

Thanks all for help , I don't know how but i have bricked my HG612. I have tried numerous time to reset the hg612 without any luck . after 45 minutes waiting  to make sure that the upgrade has completed. It will connect connect to 192.168.1.1. It states cannot connect to internet.

Connected back to ATC Airport OK but no internet connection.
May be the reset function is now faulty?
Connected BThubsmart  back up until i can get new modem with out ATC.

No a clue what i have done.

 Thanks again to all.

Hi Mikey

Sorry you have not brocked the hg612, as you state you can connect to it so it sounds like you have changed the wan side of things.

If that is the case, and you can connect to hg612 admin login page, and you use xdsl (not adsl), then please see 2 pictures attached.

You need to set the hg612 into bridge mode as per wan picture save and reboot hg612 (I know but belts and braces), log back in and set the lan side as picture/text save and reboot.

Test to make sure you can see login screen on http://10.0.1.254 before you plug the hg612 into your network

If the hg612 is connected to the phone line, the dsl sync light should be solid green - make sure you have your nework cables connected correctly (wan to wan and lan2 to lan) when you connect it back to your network.  Best advise, follow Jelv instructions to make sure you pass over the correct pppoe connection credentials as the hg612 is in bridge mode

Many thanks

John

 HI d2d4j

Thanks for your reply, Sorry if you misunderstood my  previous comments.  I tried to reset the modem with the upgrade and I left it upgrading for over an hour.I have tried on a windows 10 computer and my iMac but i am not able to get into the admin of the modem following  what i hope the upgrade had finished. Solid green lights Power and Lan2

Then i tried to log into 192.168.1.1 after changing both my iMac and Windows 10 ips to 192.168.1.100 No joy both stated internet no available.

So I connected the modem to ATC see if the standard software was there but without success. My ATC  shows that there is no internet access. This is why i feel  that some how i bricked it. I know the DSL is working as the BT smart hub is running.

Is there i reset for standard modem ?

Hi mikey

Many thanks

Did you do a hard reset of hg612. If so you need to reflash hg612

Also, so your aware of not, you do not need the hg612 connected to phone line to do this. Just connect lan2 to your switch or use a crossover cable for hg612 to win10 pc (unless the hg612 is autosensing for switch or pc)

Then set your pc to 192.168 ip as previous and then put the hg612 to load the flash screen.

When hg612 reboots, login and make/check the changes as it should be correctly defaulted on wan side, so you just need to change the lan ip as per picture. Reboot hg612 and change your win10 pc network to 10.0.1.40, and confirm access to 10.0.1.254 for login screen

Disconnect lan cable from win10 pc, plug lab cable into your switch and change win10 network back to dhcp.

Now hg612 should be accessible to mac pc but without internet

At this point you can put the phone line into the hg612 and connect lan1 to ATC and as long as ATC is configured for pppoe connection, broadband should come live

Many thanks

John

Thanks for reply, the problem could be that i am NOT using a crossover cable only a standard ethernet cable supplied  by BT with router ?
Title: Re: Problem Unlocking HG612 Time out issue
Post by: d2d4j on November 11, 2018, 02:40:38 PM
Hi mikey

It could be auto sensing

So to be sure, set your win10 ip to 192.168.1.100 subnet 255.255.255.0 leave gateway blank and plug win10 network into switch.

Plug lan2 from hg612 into switch

Then do your reflash

Then follow as previous to change hg612 network for lan2

Once done, change win10 network to dhcp and test. If works as expected, becauseit would already be on your network, your Mac should then be to see it to login

The. Plug lan1 of hg612 into your ATC wan and phone line into hg612, set your correct credentials for pppoe in ATC, and you should be good

Many thanks

The parameters you have given  i have already set , I don't have any switches. I use the Win 10 to do the software update, however i cannot tell if it modem has been updated. Just tried again and it will not access the hg612. It worked a couple of days ago . I have cleared the cache and no virus software is running.

If i could load and access the modem the rest i am happy with that.

I some how managed to get back into hg612 on 192.168.1.1,  i followed you instruction to change modem ip to 10.0.1.254 however i get a error message pointing to DCHP server section  regarding the IP 192.0.1.2 -254  see screenshot , so i didn't submit so not to cause any problems.

Is it ok to submit and clear the error message  or do i need to change anything in this section?

Hi mikey

Many thanks and excellent news

You may as well complete the dhcp range, so place a tick in enable and change the dhcp range to 10.0.1.10 to 10.0.1.11

At same time make sure you set hg612 to 10.0.1.254 save and then login back in and disable dhcp save and reboot

Check you can see the hg612 login screen and you should be good

Many thanks

When I dug out my old HG612 to try the procedure I posted earlier, as I tabbed off of the IP address it automatically changed the DHCP to the correct subnet which was why I didn't say anything about that in the instructions. Odd that it didn't for you this time. I think it must have done it the first time you changed the IP or you would have had the issue you are seeing now.

Make the changes as above and when you changed them, change your win10 IP from 192.168 range to 10.0.1 range. Then using your browser, goto http://10.0.1.254, login and your finished.

Hi mikey

Many thanks

The browser at that moment is giving a correct error as your win10 pc is not on the same network as the hg612

So in a nutshell

Set the hg612 for 10.0.1.254 as you have done

Browser will error - shutdown browser

Change win10 IP address to 10.0.1.100 subnet 255.255.255.0 no gateway

Open a browser and goto http://10.0.1.254

Confirm successful login

Plug hg612 into a LAN port on ATC

Change win10 IP address to dhcp

Check you can access hg612 from your Mac

Put your win10 pc into your not normal network

Check you can access hg612 from win10

If successful, plug phone line into hg612 and ATC WAN to LAN1 of the hg612. Leave hg612 LAN2 connected to ATC LAN port

Check internet

Everything should then be working

Many thanks

The problem is that when i click submit it takes awhile to save the changes and then it crashes out. Therefore it will not save the changes. Please see the screenshots you will see at the bottom left waiting for 192.168.1.100. Therefore i have to reset the hg612  for 5 seconds to get back to the admin.
