Title: Desperately need some help - FTTC - packet loss - How to move forward..
Post by: Biglad on October 14, 2018, 05:37:47 PM
Hi There,

Had a 80/20 FTTC installed on Thursday last week AM (11/10/18). We are migration VOIP onto it this Thursday. At the moment there is a lot of packet loss displaying on the diagnostics on phone and also just a simple ping to VOIP server show lots of packets loss. BT Openreach have been out and said that there is nothing wrong with line. I have since changed the firmware of the vdsl on the cisco 800 series router. No changes still getting packet loss.

Just wondering how to resolve? Do you think seeing if BT Openreach can do a reset on the DLM? Could it be a contension issue at Street Cab? Has anyone had this issue before and steps to resolve?

If you could please help it would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks
Andrew

Very unlikely to be anything related to the DSLAM or the xDSL link.
You're on a Huawei cabinet and have very few ES.
I can't tell from those stats if DLM has applied G.INP/Retransmission yet but a DLM reset wouldn't help with packet loss in any way.

Who is the ISP? Do you have another router you could try?

You could setup a BQM to monitor latency/packet loss every second.
https://www.thinkbroadband.com/broadband/monitoring/quality/create

This will tell you if the line is actually suffering packet loss in general or if it's a more specific issue between you and the VOIP server.

If A2pv6C035d.d23j is the current dsl firmware in use, that's still pretty old.

I find the VDSL firmware section thoroughly confusing.

I was comparing the 35d.d23j with the 38m.d24j from the last HG612 firmware.

Hi

Thanks for both coming back to me so quickly.

*ISP: Intechnology/Redcentric
*Will Try another router tomorrow was going to use same VDSL firmware as told to use by ISP? Or you think should go for latest and greatest?
*Have set up on thinkbroadband.
*Can i ask OpenReach to get G.INP enabled? Is this something you can ask for?
*ISP are getting BT openreach to revisit tomorrow(This will be there second visit - embarrassing when they just come back and say they can not issues with line). Is there is something specific i can ask them or ask what checks they have done? Would there be anything else to suggest while i am on site with BT Openreach to ask them to test?
*The Packet loss does seem to be worse during the day?!

thinkbroadband attached. At the moment there is not much packet loss.

I find the Cisco web site very difficult to negotiate, especially when the actual device is not precisely known.

You mention a "Cisco 800 series router". Could you be specific, please?

No, its something that the DLM (dynamic line management) process turns on automatically if needed - this is usually after a line has been active for a few days.

All Openreach can do is reset the DLM which resets the process and restarts the clock - so not something you really want in this instance.

There's a reference to 887VA-SE on the serial number.

I believe this is the correct 800 Series device.

Not much OpenReach can do. They simply check the line meets spec. I believe they can run some type of PPP related tests but I don't know if they check specifically for packet loss? Perhaps others can comment on that.

Personally I think the ISP is better placed to diagnose such issues. OpenReach only control a small part of the link. BTWholesale may be who needs to look into this if that's who the ISP uses for backhaul.

What do you think about just quickly changing the firmware now to - VA_A_38q_B_38r1_24j.bin ?

It might be worthwhile updating to the latest available firmware image.  :-\

ok got to the bottom of this issue. This only happens between 8:30am - 10:30pm - This is totally a capacity issue with Redcentric and their provider BT. They appear to be dropping packets. Does anyone know of a good Business FTTC provider that is not running hot on their connects to BT?

I would recommend AAISP.

They always aim to run an uncongested network and if the issue is between them and you (e.g. in the backhaul network or the exchange) I would expect they would do what they can to resolve it.  i.e. they consider congestion/packet-loss a fault to be fixed.

I'm sure they're not alone though.

Thanks for that Dave. Will have a look now. :) Has any detail with Zen? Are they any good?
