Title: Outside in socks vs inside out socks
Post by: sevenlayermuddle on September 28, 2018, 10:01:06 AM
I was having a grumble (I like doing that) about how my socks often emerge from the washing machine, outside in.   Better half corrected me (she likes doing that) “I think you mean inside out.”

I don’t think it had ever occurred to me that the two alternative expressions exist.   But I have now begun to ponder...

Do they really mean exactly the same thing?
Is one in any way “better” than the other, whether in relation to socks or any other usage?
Are there maybe regional differences (I am of Scottish background)?
Any other considerations?

Inside out is certainly the expression I'm used to, and I'm certain they enter the washing machine that way  ;)

"inside out" is what is common in scotland from what i've encountered in my 42 years being in scotland.

I suppose there's an outside chance that they were put in the machine inside in (or outside out) and that some trick turned them inside out (or outside in). However without inside knowledge (or someone watching from outside) of how they were when put inside the washing machine there's only an outside chance of us shedding light on this mystery.

I've never heard anyone say "outside in". You must have created the phrase yourself, 7LM. :)

That sounds an extremely boring film.

Maybe so.  But from reading the plot, wouldn’t “inside out” be a more appropriate title?

Either way, thanks for all input.  I’m going to stand by my own version, that some of my socks were outside in.  I could have added, in order to rectify the defect of course, I had to turn the affected socks inside out.

One day you may find “outside in” becomes common usage, and you’ll all know where it began. :D

That sounds an extremely boring film.

And, to me, a pointless waste of time.

OTOH you could make sure you kept your socks outside out instead of bunched up when you took them off, and the problem wouldn't occur at all. ;)
