Now I know what it is, and why.
But I see members of the board see it as a must when it comes to their ISP of choice but really why the importance?
There can't be that much out there yet that supports IPV6 otherwise it would be common place?
Or am I just being a "luddite"?

There are thousands of services that support IPV6.
Many of them deliberately use IPV6 over IPV4.
There are very few services online that need IPV6.
Most things will fallback to IPV4 if IPV6 isn't available.
The average home user doesn't need it. I don't know many scenarios where it is absolutely essential.
In a free market the customer is free to choose their supplier and some put IPV6 high on the list of what they want from an ISP.

For a more comprehensive list google IPv6 sites. There's also an article from 2016 here (https://blog.cloudflare.com/98-percent-ipv6/) that report that 98.01% of sites on Cloudflare now use IPv6.
The myth that not much of the internet uses IPv6 is largely perpetrated by those that are not making steps towards IPv6.

IPv6 might be slightly slower in theory because of the larger headers, but in practice you'd be pushed to see the difference!

Do you have a 4G phone? If you do it is very likely that you are already an IPv6 user!
You could check that by seeing if you can access https://loopsofzen.uk/

My own email address is IPv6- and IPv4-friendly, in the sense that my inbound mail servers servers are on the IPv6 and IPv4 internet. So too the outward-facing DNS servers for my primary domain name.
If you have a Microsoft o/s, iirc that will use IPv6 LAN-internally even if your ISP does not speak IPv6.
You can set up IPv6 via a tunnel if you have an outdated ISP. See for example the Hurricane Electric tunnel service (https://tunnelbroker.net/).

Yup. Spent far too long one evening playing it. :D

Windows 7 onwards will also automatically relay to IPv6 networks using Teredo (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teredo_tunneling).

Even Win Vista did too. I forgot about Teredo, I used to use it the moment I got my first copy of Vista

I absolutely loved Vista. It was very slow in some respects, most notably the GUI with all the XAML or whatever it was called, but fast in others. The first service pack was an improvement. The new security stuff and split privilege "integrity levels" and the 100% redesigned networking system with integrated IPv6, and IPv4 redesigned according to IPv6, design principles was excellent. Full disk encryption was great too, used it on laptops. Loved everything about it. Win7 was the big performance jump. WinXP SP3 was a big periformance jump too which makes me wonder if a succession of huge improvement in their compiler code generation was behind it all. Compilers have made some impressive advances in a number of areas that affect code quality hugely in the last 12 years or so.

Deathstar to give you an idea what supports ipv6, nearly all of EE 's traffic is ipv6, and the majority of sky's traffic as of 2 years ago was ipv6 never mind now.
Mainstream services such as facebook, netflix and youtube have utilised ipv6 for years now. They dont require ipv6 but will utilise it if its on your connection.
The backward way of thinking is that one shouldnt bother with ipv6 until services they use require it.
BT and sky, 2 of the biggest UK isp's have rolled out ipv6 to millions of customers, so one could say it is now commonplace in the UK.

No IPV6 on O2 for me anyway.
Looks like it could be the next progression for me, but I need an ISP change then.

I don't think Vodafone supports IPv6 either. At least until a few months ago. I'm now with EE and can confirm I have IPv6.
You can run a very cheap website by purchasing an IPv6-only VPS and putting it behind Cloudflare, which will make it reachable on v4 and v6.
