Title: Benchmark your DNS speed
Post by: sheddyian on August 15, 2018, 01:41:56 PM
I thought this might be of interest if it's not already known about - a little Windows program that will benchmark a list of DNS servers and show you which is best (and most reliable) for you.

https://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm (https://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm)

It's free and I've found it useful.

When you run it for the first time, go to Nameservers tab, then click add/remove and choose the build (rebuild) custom list option.  This takes about 40 minutes, but will find nameservers relevant to you (your country, your ISP etc).

You can add any others you want to the list as well, and then it will benchmark the speed, reliability and whether the particular DNS redirects instead of returning an error.

You'll then get a report of recommendations as to which would most benefit you.

Thank you for mentioning that utility. I believe it is documented (somewhere) on the main site.

that may be where I first found it  :D  I used it some years back, then never again.  It came back to mind when messing about with DHCP and my DNS settings the other day.

I also use it, runs fine under Wine on Linux.
