Title: Slowing upstream
Post by: shaun1264 on August 12, 2018, 01:45:41 PM
Got a little problem here. My upstream seems to be getting slower and slower.  2 months ago it was at the normal 7mbps but now it's been creeping down to around 2mbps.  Downstream seems fine and stable around 47mpbs on a 3db profile.  G.inp on the downstream and g.inp went off this morning on the upstream.  Not sure what would cause this strange slow down on upstream of speed when download seems fine.    Modem is a Technicolour DGA4132 .   Tried with a Billion 8800nl r2.   Similar findings.  Power output on upstream stands out?   Service provider Plusnet.

Immediately I can see from the overview that only U0 and U1 have an attenuation value, with U1 being quite attenuated (which means it may be fairly limited in what can be allocated in that). U2 seems to be attenuated beyond what is usable. May indicate why your upstream is limited.

Do you know when your cabinet was enabled, and how long after it was enabled did you sign up (when did you subscribe to your service)? Dropping upstream speeds could be the typical signs of crosstalk increasing.

If you're using the 8800NL R2, you should be able to use https://kitz.co.uk/routers/hg612stats.htm (https://kitz.co.uk/routers/hg612stats.htm) to get a graphical overview of your current stats. This will represent a lot of the modem's statistics in a graphical form which you can then upload to this topic. If you download the zip, unzip it and configure the main program in "Scripts" then you will be able run "HG612_current_stats.exe" after which will graph the stats in the "Current_Stats" in the root folder.

Note: I am not sure if the DGA4132 will work the program, but if it is unlocked (with telnet access) and has a Broadcom chipset like I believe then it should still be possible to configure.

Cabinet is no.1 cabinet in Godalming, Surrey. This has been there for many years.  It's had a add on side box installed last year.  At the moment it has a red workman barrier around it and been like that for several weeks now.

I'll try and get some more stats when I'm back.  At the moment I can't get dslstats to work with the technicolour. Connects but doesn't return data.  It did work but stopped for some reason.

I forgot to say  the Billion 8800nl r2 router would lock up and freeze when connected behind the MK4 faceplate in the test socket.   It would be fine using the normal socket.  Interference?

Back in November Openreach moved me on to another backhaul? As they said it was congested on the one I had after I reported slow downstream.

Indeed. FTTC available since 7th October 2010. Perhaps the side box was capacity expansion. Not sure what works would be going on there, though.

I'll try and get some more stats when I'm back.  At the moment I can't get dslstats to work with the technicolour. Connects but doesn't return data.  It did work but stopped for some reason.
Maybe the shell comand is different to other devices. Perhaps try https://kitz.co.uk/routers/telnet_router.htm (https://kitz.co.uk/routers/telnet_router.htm). When you've telnet'd into the modem, you should be able to get into the shell using "sh". There are many variations of the "adsl" command which are listed at https://wiki.kitz.co.uk/index.php/Broadcom_CLI (https://wiki.kitz.co.uk/index.php/Broadcom_CLI), but try something like "adsl info --show" and if the command is invalid try the variants until you get one to work. Let us know how you get on.

I forgot to say  the Billion 8800nl r2 router would lock up and freeze when connected behind the MK4 faceplate in the test socket.   It would be fine using the normal socket.  Interference?
Nope. Don't see how that is possible. I would, in this scenario, advise you to upgrade to the latest firmware and select for it to restore default settings (in case you have a "dirty" config that is causing issues). http://www.billion.uk.com/esupport/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/417/119/latest-bipac-8800nl-r2-firmware-252d10 (http://www.billion.uk.com/esupport/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/417/119/latest-bipac-8800nl-r2-firmware-252d10) appears to be the latest. If the issues persist, then you may want to create a ticket at Billion's support site.

Back in November Openreach moved me on to another backhaul? As they said it was congested on the one I had after I reported slow downstream.
Backhaul has nothing to do with sync speed. That is the link that carries data to and from exchanges. Perhaps there were some backhaul changes due to congestion.

At a glance, anyway, I would say that the upstream should fall quite well below the Fault Threshold Rate (if this still exists?). Seeing how it has decreased quite a lot over the past 2 months, it could be a fault - possibly with a line card. This may need to be reported once you've gone down every other avenue in case they send out an engineer for a chargable job.

Edit: Fixed typo

OK, got the line ready for Plusnet to test (plug into test socket blah blah)  after posting on their forum so they should start testing at some point soon.

Definitely very poor upstream

Let us know what results you get back, less any unique identifiers. As it's on the forum, they'll remove any line identifiers, etc. from their post.

Title: Re: Slowing upstream
Post by: re0 on August 12, 2018, 08:13:39 PM
We need to see some more information.

Firstly, in DSLstats go to "Configuration" then "Items to Monitor" and check "SNR per tone" and check "Include with bitloadting". If DSLstats is currently active, the graph will update at the next interval.

What we need to see is graphs for the HLog (you've already included), bitloading and QLN. And we need statistics from under "Telnet Data" including "Connection Stats" and "pbParams". Please paste the text information using code tags as it makes it easier to distinguish.

Tip: You can snapshot graphs using the camera icon which is usually located somewhere under the graph. This will store the screenshot in the location configured as the data store (can be changed in the "Configuration" tab). For the text stats, you can use the clipboard icon to copy to your clipboard for pasting.

I can see your line is a bit susceptible to noise since ReTX is high (INPRein), at least on downstream. But we'll put that aside for now.

Something is not looking right with that upstream. It's certainly a bit anemic. U1 can sometimes have less bits loaded per tone than U2 (on my line, U2 has a higher SNR than U1). But there is virtually nothing allocated in U1 and U2 is just empty. Based on typical connections, the SNR should be enough to load about 3-5 bits per tone in U2 (at 6 dB SNR) and U1 should also be able to allocate a similar number.

The QLN baselines look quite high for the upstream bands compared to what I am used to. Perhaps if someone could comment whether this is an indication of an issue? It looks a bit suspect to me. But the HLog is a pretty clean slope.

I would wait for a response from Plusnet. Something is definitely amiss here. As long as you have done all the leg work (such as trying different filters, leads and modems), I think there is no reason why this won't be recognised as a fault out of your control.

7 Mbps, as you received before, should be possible quite easily. I would be surprised that if you couldn't get more once this has been resolved.

Keep us posted. But keep an eye on this space as some other members may have something to add.

One other configuration adjustment is required within DSLstats.

A G.993.2, Profile 17a, service has a total of 4096 sub-carriers (numbered from 0 to 4095). At present, the plots you have shown us are truncated and we do not see the entire bandwidth. There is a "Change tone range" button below any of the "per tone" plots. Left-click on it and select the "Custom" option. Then adjust the slider so that all 4096 sub-carriers are visible in the plots.

So Plusnet agrees that the upstream is slow and would like to send an Openreach engineer out to investigate.

Ive attached a new QLN graph so all sub carriers are shown.   Thanks

Yeah, the upstream is a lot lower than I would anticipate. The downstream is actually pretty good to be honest.

Good that they will send an engineer out. As long as you have as much as you can on your end, they won't charge you. But I doubt that they won't find a fault.

Time to update after Openreach attended to fix fault.

Before engineer came out the line did a resync today after 7 days of continuous connection.  Snr went back to 6dB.  I guess something was reset.

Engineer was here from 8am to 12:30pm to rectify fault.  He seemed very thorough which included going the pole and several visits to the local cabinet to fix the fault.  With oscillator plugged in he was at the cabinet for about 30 mins on his last visit.

Back to normal now.   7mbps upload and the Power (dbm) figure up at 5.6dbm. FEC errors really low now too on downstream.   I didnt really ask what the fault was but he did change the pairs and several visits to cabinet.

That's always a good result. :) Hopefully the upstream won't deviate much or drop.

Could have been a fault with your D-side pair and he was looking for a decent spair pair that you could be hooked up to. Sometimes there can be a few naff pairs around as faults develop on the existing copper network.

Perhaps you could post your new stats including graphs for bitloading, QLN and HLog?

Title: Re: Slowing upstream

I don't have too much to comment. It looks okay from what I can see. The errors are getting dealt with (as can be seen with the FEC counter), and it's doing a good job. It's mostly on the downstream anyway. I do not have a great comparison, but there are quite a lot of FECs on the downstream (though may explain why your ReTX was high before if you have a line susceptible to noise).

I don't see a graph for the bitloading, but I don't suppose it really matters anyway. I just wanted to see the difference before and after (a bit curious).

I am happy that you have gotten your problem resolved and your upstream is back where you expect it.
