Title: Solwise 4G / 3G router model 4G-54RV
Post by: Weaver on August 07, 2018, 05:58:03 PM
I have one of these 4G-to-802.11n routers, but I can not find a manual for it anywhere. All I can see in the Solwise website is a ‘Quick-start installation / setup guide’. This is useful but it does not go into any detail about the various settings.

Could any detectives amongst us dig out a manual from somewhere?

I think it is possible that Solwise buy them from somewhere else and put their name on them because some of the other products they now advertise have another brand name on them - I have seen something like 'Teltonika'.

I see that Solwise describe it as a Discontinued Item (https://www.solwise.co.uk/4g-routers-54rv.html).

The Overview --

Quote from: Solwise
The 54RV is a low cost 4G/LTE router aimed squarely at the SoHo and domestic market place. Solwise already sells the Teltonika range of 3G/4G routers but we kept on getting asked for a lower cost option for the typical home user. To this end we have sourced the 54RV 4G router. The 54RV router comes from one of our established suppliers and uses the Huawei ME906E LTE/4G module. This gives maximum speeds of 100mbps DL and 50mbps UL.

The 54RV has 300m 11n 2.4GHz WFi and users also have the option to change and fit higher performance 4G antenna. Differences from a high end router like the Teltonika 950? Well the 54RV doesn't have things like a built in VPN server or dual SIM operation or a wide DC power range but these are features not required by the typical home user anyway!

The Quick Set-Up Guide (https://www.solwise.co.uk/downloads/files/4g-54rv-quick-installation-guide.pdf) is easy to obtain. Perhaps if you were to contact Solwise they might be able to provide you with more detailed information?

I have had it for about 18 months. I am wondering if it has another identity too?

From my searches I could find no evidence of that.

I am presuming that you planned mode of usage would be to get Donald McDonald to mount a highly directional antenna high up, on the side of the house, using rock-bolts and then carefully align it at the tower across the valley. With that antenna connected to the 4G-54RV, the latter could then provide an alternative link to the Firebrick, for use when all four xDSL circuits "go down"? Or do you intend it to be used as the means of connection for your mobile phones?

The antennae are not directional. I got it for a trip to england for Janet's mum's 90th birthday. It is there for emergency use but I may instead enhance the FB2700 by plugging a USB 3G ‘dongle’ failover device into it. The Solwise will then be available for any of Janet's guests to borrow and use in their hut for a charge if they are really desperate for some internet. But the problem is how to charge them for it. Another application is for when I next get stuck in hospital, as I have found that you cannot get any signal unless you can park some kit in a window, and I have done exactly that before, parking a phone in a window and using 802.11n to bridge to my iPad in my hospital bed. The device has two optional upgrade antennae on extension cables to get more gain, also non-directional. I should see if I can find a directional antenna for an FB2700 dongle, but the interface specs of these devices are fairly chaotic and a lot of them do not work with a Firebrick because it would have to cope with so very many different types of interface architecture. Since I have an absolutely perfect clear line of sight from the office window to the basestation, I am hoping for good results.

I may have misunderstood *  but would it not be easier to use a dongle with one of your ZyXels?

I think the VMG1312s do.  I know for sure that both my VMG8324 and VMG8924 support 3/4G dongles.    Plug in the dongle and it will become the WAN connection if DSL falls over.

*sorry not fully with it right now.

See here for using a dongle for internet connectivity with a Zyxel VMG

Section 6.3 shows setup for with a dongle.
