Title: BT Boroadband Speed and Stability Issues
Post by: sy278 on May 29, 2008, 09:44:34 PM
Hi Guys,

I have read over the details of the figures for SNR and I'm kinda struggling a bit with it.

I would appreciate if those of you in the know could look at my figures and give me your opinion:

Quote
System Up Time 20:39:33

Port          Status                     TxPkts      RxPkts     Collisions      Tx B/s     Rx B/s       Up Time
WAN         PPPoA                     42             43            0                  170        686           00:00:47

WLAN       11M/54M/108M        15525       13726        0                  154         24            20:39:23

Connection Speed        3776 kbps        448 kbps
Line Attenuation          31.0 db             18.0 db
Noise Margin                12.5 db             19.0 db

Last night I replaced my Netgear DG834G v2 with a DG834GT and replaced the microfilter. I did this because the old router has been showing numerous resets over the lasts 6 weeks or so with LCP is down errors (I know this is the router loosing sync) but also with the date and time defaulting as if the router had been defaulted or power cycled, so I ordered a replacement one.

I also tried to use speedtester.bt.com but it gets stuck at 96% with the error

Exception::access denied (java.net.SoketPermission 217.32.105.42:50301 connect,resolv
. However it does say

Your configured download throughput speed for this service is 135 k
previously my figure was around the 7500 mark.

Any advice would be appreciated.

PS My only BT socket in the house is not the standard NTE5, its older so does not have the test socket, but i do hear a bit of hiss on the line.

Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome :)

>> Your configured download throughput speed for this service is 135 k

Thats not good - your sync speeds have been so low at some time in the past that your IP profile has been lowered. Thats the lowest profile and your speeds must be pretty dire :(
This could be due to the noise on the line or the faulty old router and/or a combination of both.
However your IP profile should soon rise to 3000 if you maintain a the current sync speed.

>> Line Attenuation          31.0 db

I would expect a 31dB line to get a lot more than 3776kbps so theres obviously something wrong on the line.
The hiss isnt good - do you get that if you do a quiet line test (Dial 17070 and select option 2).
If you have clearly audible noise on the phone then it should be reported to BT as a telephone fault.

Hi Kitz,

Thanks for the reply.

I did try the quiet test and could still hear some hiss, though I am using a DECT phone. I will try and test with a corded phone soon.

I called BT Broadband support last night who have said they would log a call with BT Wholesale, who have called this morning and are arranging for an engineer to come out on Sunday.

My stats this morning are:

Dear me, that's terrible. If you've only got a single BT-installed socket then your own internal wiring isn't the cause of the problem. Hopefully the engineer will sort it out. Be nice to him. :)

hmmm

Not sure if Im reading this right, but the thing I find strange is that Interleaving is on and you have:
3181  RS Corrected (FEC Errors),
yet you have 6975 CRC Errors.

Normally FEC errors would be higher than CRC errors, as you'd obviously expect interleaving and error correction to pick up more.  The only thing thats really saying is that when the noise burst occurs its too severe in most instances for error correction to be able to recover the data.

The amount of errors though is acceptable for your uptime, so it could be too little data to actually say for sure.. but in view of the amount of errored seconds combined with the above info.. it looks more like Noise Spikes, rather than constant noise is causing the problem.

Which is in contradiction to the fact that you are consistently syncing at slower than normal speeds which is indicative of constant noise - so the above could be a total red herring.

There is something very wrong with the line though - a 32dB line should be more than able to to withstand a 12.5dB noise margin at 3Mb without dropping.

Are you able to log your SNRMargin with routerstats (http://www.vwlowen.co.uk/internet/files.htm) which may give a lot more indication if its general constant noise, or noise spikes.

Thanks for that - no real spikes showing - and typical of a generally noisy line - but still within "normal noise parameters"....  aside
That upwards spike is interesting and how it petered back down again soon after.

Unfortunately I cant really suggest anything else - it will be down to the engineer now to see what he can spot on the actual line.
You seem to have done all you can to eliminate all possibilities of being elsewhere
Good luck and please let us know how it goes.

Yeah i was surprised by this too!  :'(

As an aside I just tried to use the phone and saw the following happen:

Which showed as below in the graph, with a high point of 214db!

Woaaaah - just look at thoses spikes and stats. :swoon:  Good recording!

I'm obviously unsure when you picked the phone up during that period, but those are some classic figures in there (not to mention the appauling resync of 192 which is I pressume when you put the phone back down) :(

Looks like you have a "high open" fault see ~ adsl only works when the phone is being used (http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/connectionprobs.htm).

You definitely need to tell the engineer about your latest observations that things go crazy when you use the phone.  Now he just needs to find which part of the line is damaged/corroded.  To be that bad that soon, hopefully it should be easy for him to find.

As an aside, the "214" dB is probably to do with the way the Netgear displays negative SNR figures.

Instead of -1, the netgear will display 2,147,483,647 dB. Why? It just so happens that in binary, this large number is denoted as 0111 1111 1111 1111 1111 1111 1111 1111 and -1 is denoted as 1111 1111 1111 1111 1111 1111 1111 1111 (etc).

I don't know quite how it comes about, but perhaps the code that saves the value only writes 31 bits, or perhaps the display code reads the long string of 1's back and incorrectly interprets them as the number 2,147,483,647, which is faithfully read and interpreted by RouterStats!

So yeah, it's an amusing, but also quite annoying, bug!

(And there endeth the binary lesson!)

Yup the resync is where I put the phone down. I first picked it up at 23:01:11 on the scale.

PS ignore the dates on the graphs, obviously they are garbage, someone had changed the date on my PC.

Sorry its off-topic but I have to ask this - sy278 : Is your username a number of a boat by any chance? If it is then its a very small world indeed :D

Thank gods for that as it would have been too weird for words

Do you have the wireless turned on? I only ask as my 834GT gives stupid results like that on Routerstats when it is - in my case they aren't real changes in noise margin (ie they don't affect my connection), but your graph looks remarkably similar to mine when I have wireless turned on.

Well the BT engineer arrived at 9.15 this morning and has just left:

He found a bad connection at one of the line boxes in the street, after he remade the connection my sync speed immediately jumped up to 7616kbps.

Latest test on speedtester showed:

Quote
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 135 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  7616 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 100 kbps

And the router is showing

Quote
ADSL Link                 Downstream       Upstream
Connection Speed     7616 kbps           448 kbps
Line Attenuation        29.0 db               16.5 db
Noise Margin             15.0 db                23.0 db

The Noise margin has been 14.8 to 15.0 for the last 10 mins.

So now just need to wait a few days for the bras ip profile to reset.

Well done to BT very impressed with the service.  ;D

Excellent! Your target noise margin has been bumped up to 15 dB because of the previous instability, but if it's now stable the margin should come down automatically over a period of weeks (but this depends on the error rate). Even without this you're well up towards the maximum speed. :)

Im glad they found out where the problem lay...  and on a sunday too!

Excellent result :)

7,616 kbps is probably the maximum speed anyway, because of the the restriction due to interleaving.

Nice one ;D
