Title: wifi security with router extender

I am trying to set up security on wifi access for a friend.

Their set up is a netgear DG834G with a netgear router extender.  I can set up protection on DG834G, but the extender router will not accept the 'passphrase'.  I assume this to be wifi password. 

When trying to set connect extender a netgear set sequence is activated where the passphrase is requested.  I have entered the wifi password but nothing happens when I click continue.  No error message to say wrong password etc.  When entering the passphrase the letters and numbers etc can be seen rather than a line of dots?

Any suggestions as to what might be stopping the extender connecting to the main router?
