Title: Ofcom review of directory enquiries
Post by: 4candles on June 13, 2018, 03:18:32 PM
Typical Ofcom - these rip-off merchants should have been reined in  years ago.

Ofcom has today published a consultation on directory enquiry (118) numbers (https://ofcom.cmail19.com/t/i-l-bhjdriy-ebtiktkh-k/), following a review of how people use these services, and the cost of calling them.

We have been concerned about the rising cost of directory enquiry services. Last year we launched a Call Cost Review (https://ofcom.cmail19.com/t/i-l-bhjdriy-ebtiktkh-u/) to ensure prices are transparent and fair.  In addition to the high prices that some directory enquiry providers charge, our review has found a lack of transparency and awareness of their cost. People are often paying much more than they expect. As a result, we are proposing to cap the cost of directory enquiries services at £3.10 per 90 seconds, which would bring prices back to 2013 levels.

Today’s consultation closes on 22 August 2018, and we aim to publish our conclusions by the end of the year.

Mostly I'd guess only those without web access and least able to afford being ripped off.   :(

Maybe old folks too who are not able to find out about the alternatives. £3 is unbelievable!

£3.10 per 90 seconds is still a rip-off. When you call one of these services they offer (twist your arm) to let them connect you when you then carry on paying their exorbitant charges for what is likely to be a call to an 01 or 02 number.

i suppose 118118 have to get the money to pay for their continual advertising somehow.
