Title: ZyXEL DC power supplies
Post by: Weaver on May 15, 2018, 12:03:42 PM
I was wondering about getting some spare dc power supply bricks/‘wall warts’ for my ZyXel VMG 1312-B10A modem/router.

* Anyone know where to get hold of some ? eBay - Can't see any on eBay just at the moment.

* Are they interchangeable with other eg ZyXel common kit. I have a lot of ZyXel NWA 3650n WAPs, including one broken one. I would have to check the specs of its dc supply or measure it to check if that device’s brick would serve as a spare. If other routers have exactly the same dc pay then I could look around more widely amongst eBay adverts.

I suspect I can get my young next door neighbour to bring a multimeter over.

It appears to be a 12V 1.0A supply and that is exactly what I have on my Openreach HG612. If the connector on the end is the same, that should be just what you need.

12V 1.0A (or higher) as stated, with positive centre pin (most do).
Where you need to be more careful is the plug size, as I believe these need the one with the larger centre hole (2.5mm).
I assume the two you have coming from France will have Euro type plugs on their power supplies on them and will need adaptors?

[Mrs Weaver warned me about the mains plugs after I had hit the button. She already has a plug converter because she keeps them for foreign b&b guests, just need to get two more of the same then.]

What about other ZyXEL router models ? Same spec?

And what size is the dc plug for the hg612?

The HG612 brick is made by Technetix model APS003 with positive centre. It has a 5mm outer for the negative and the centre pin does look a little on the stout side.

For comparison my modern ASUS RT-AC86U brick is a slim outer with a thin centre pin.

That should be a 12V 1.5A one so will be just fine for @Weaver.

Another suitable candidate would be from a Home Hub 3 Type A - there should be plenty available on eBay very cheaply!

A normal PSU connector will have a barrel with an outside diameter of 5mm and the centre pin may be either 2.1mm or 2.5mm.

Another very useful source for 12V DC PSUs that can deliver up to 2A is the notorious Vodafone badged Huawei HHG2500 (https://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,18911.0.html). Those devices could be picked up, new & sealed in the box, for just pennies. I had one of those HHG2500s for a while (shortly after N*Star had migrated to VF) and when it was finally added to the electronics recycling pile, I kept the PSU. (I use that PSU with my Firebrick FB105.)

Yes, they are rated to be capable of supplying up to 2A at 12V DC. Taking another quick look at the one I possess, I see that it is Huawei branded . . . which is not surprising as the CPE itself is Huawei manufactured.

And what size is the dc plug for the hg612?

The HG612 supply has too small a centre pin for the VMG1312, just tried it.

The HG612 supply has too small a centre pin for the VMG1312, just tried it.

I have just tried the PSU from a Vodafone branded Huawei HHG2500 and also find the central hole in the plug's barrel too small for the pin of a VMG1312-B10A's socket.  :(

However I have had success with two other PSUs.

The first one is marked --

DVE AC Adaptor
Model No: DV-1280-3UK
Input: 230 - 240V AC 50Hz 100mA
Output: 12V DC 1000mA
Made In China

The second one is marked --

TIGER AC/DC Adaptor
Model: CH-1220A
Input: 100 - 240V AC 50/60Hz 0.5A
Output: 12v DC 2A
Made In China

I am using the adapter for a Billion 7800 on my VMG-1312-B10A. 12v 1.5A and has the correct plug.

I can't find my old ZyXEL P-660 modems. Does anyone know if their bricks are a candidate?

Also the 8924 router?

My 8324 PSU fits a 1312.

Can I ask why you are on the hunt for so many supplies? I cannot remember the last time a smps of this size broke on me.

I keep getting kit destroyed by lightning strikes and I have three lines. So bitter experience has led me to keep plenty of spares of modems.

Quite possibly.

Did you notice skyeci's offer (https://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,21532.msg372519.html#msg372519), above?
