i'm needing to pick up a huawei modem.
is there anything i should be looking for (or avoiding)?
-
Are you looking to purchase a HG612?
-
yes
-
Make sure you get the '3B' variant (clearly marked on back label) as earlier ones were prone to overheating.
Out of interest why do you particularly want an HG612 as they are starting to get a bit old now?
:)
-
isn't the HG612 still the default standard for standalone modems?
-
It's still a good performer, but hasn't been produced for several years, so used examples are likely to be wearing out some time fairly soon. If you can find one, a Zyxel VMG1312-B10A configured in bridge mode is a good option.
-
Seems a waste to use that and put it in bridge mode.
Would rather use a standalone modem (regardless of make)
-
I have an HG612 3B already unlocked which is in good order going spare that I intend to sell on behalf of a charity I volunteer for: Hope Nature Centre (http://www.hopenaturecentre.org.uk/newsite/) (just started looking after their IT). It was sitting in a cupboard unused having been replaced by a Draytek soon after they got FTTC. I brought it home, unlocked it with the latest HW and used it myself on my line for a fortnight to check it was good.
Would you like to make an offer?

What's the going rate?

I highly recommend a Zyxel VMG1312-B10A set up in bridge (modem only) mode.
It has a much newer Broadcom chipset, the BCM63168.
It will sync higher than the HG612, with generally lower errors.
-
What's the going rate?
From what I can see around £20 plus postage.

much much more expensive though.
new they are around £100+
second hand still circa £50+
not paying that for what is essentially will be 1 part of what is essentially something to play with.
i'm already syncing at 76Mbps down /20Mpbs up (on a fritzbox) so probably not much left to eek out of the line anyway.
-
I got mine for around £40 new delivered.
I sourced 1 new about 3 weeks ago for a relative for £44.99.
They no longer make that model so it will likely become harder to source and probably more expensive.

£40 new?
i've not seen any for that price.
broadbandbuyer lists them at £110

In the past month 2 new ones have gone for under £30 delivered on ebay. Many more used ones for between £20-£25.
edit: VMG1312-B10As for clarity
-
i'll take another look, but vast majority are £65+
https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=VMG1312-B10A&_sop=15
the first one on this list appears to be a slightly different model though (based on the photo).
-
All the buy it now ones with long listing times are vastly overpriced, need to be patient and watch closely for a while till a reasonably priced one comes up. If you look through the completed listings none of the stupidly priced ones actually sell.
I have purchased a new VMG1312-B10A & VMG8324-B10A (as in still with the peel off plastic on) for less than £20 each in the past 6 months, you just need to check on ebay fairly regularly and be patient.
edit: Also that first one in your link is a VMG1312-B10D avoid.
-
Yep. These two went for £16 each. Both used.

I would highly recommend the 8800nl v1 if you are looking to use it in bridge. . There are a couple on eBay Has always out performed my zyxels being the 8324,8924 plus the 3925.. there's one with a starting price of a £10.
-

The first one is a -B10D, so it's an incorrect listing.

Both definitely B10A I think. You have to scroll down a bit to see the original listing (with photos and all) :)
-
Definitely B10D

Look at the actual sales on eBay.
Pointless looking at what people are asking for. If I list my modem for £200 that doesn't make it worth that.
I always check what an item achieves in past listings.
The VMG1312-b10A pops up regularly around £40-50 new. The A being important as the D modem has an inferior budget Broadcom chipset.
I have "VMG1312-B10A" as a saved search on eBay. I get notified every time a listing appears. If your budget goes that far and your interested in sourcing that particular model then using the saved search function might be the way to go.
Currently there's a new model for £49 plus postage. Not quite the £110 that some are trying to charge. Outrageous pricing imo.
-
@highpriest Just realised we are probably at cross purposes: johnson, roseway and myself are all referring to the first one in the link posted by chenks

They weren't discussing the 2 links you posted, but the link 2 posts above your post.
It's a search for "vmg1312-b10a" but the very 1st listing is a D model.
-
Whoops, sorry ;D
-
I sent the seller a message asking if he was deliberately misrepresenting the version. He has now corrected it - sort off! It now says B10D.A
-
In the description lower down it still says B10A.
-
well i did find one for a cheap price on ebay.
ordered it, got delivered and it came without a power adaptor (listing made no mention of it not having one).
contacted them and they said it doesn't have one.
i advised them of their misleading listing and it's now on its way back to them.
they had it listed at £65 (for a second hand one), with the option of making an offer, i offered circa £20~ which was accepted.
shows you that they were just chancing their luck.
-
The VMG1312 only needs a 1A 12V adapter IIRC... none lying around the house? Pretty much any modem/router you bought in the past 10 years will have come with one.
-
None that aren't attached to something already.
The seller was clearly being misleading by not mentioning it.
That are taking it back and paying the postage so they'll be out of pocket for the privelidge
