Title: Has anyone had any experience using pre-paid cards?
Post by: Bowdon on March 04, 2018, 01:20:26 PM: I'm thinking of buying some stuff online and I usually use paypal as an extra security protection. But the site in particular doesn't accept paypal. So I was wondering about these pre-paid cards that I hear about.

I think they come in the form of debit and credit top-up cards.

I'd be using it mainly for online transactions.

As anyone had some experience with these cards? Is there any you recommend?

I have and regularly use a Pockit card.
The card cost 99p
There's a few things that cost 99p (loading at paypoint, cash withdrawals at atm's, bank transfers from your pockit account(not to it)) but using the card in store and online is free.

It does bank transfers in and out. It can take wages and benefits. It gives cashback for select retailers (the reason I got it).

Anything I buy that is in $ or € my banks charges me £1 and a foreign transaction fee. The pockit card doesn't.
So I buy my sons Roblox subscription with it.

When Ryanair canceled our flight I had put Euro's on it, so I converted it back to £ (on-line) and used it in the uk.

Minimum top up is £50, and you get charged for the privilege.

You can top up the Pockit card free via wages/benefits or bank transfer. Fixed £0.99 fee for topping up at any pay point.
They are also rolling out direct debit to Pockit accounts for those who are unable to obtain a bank account.

The main benefit of the Pockit card is the great cashback. 4% in Argos, 6% in M&S.

I have used loads of different sites and can only recall one bad transaction (double billed). A quick call to the credit card company got that fixed straight away.
As a bonus, for more expensive purchases (>£100 I believe), you have additional protection in law from the credit card company if anything goes wrong.
Perhaps I have just been lucky?

They just killed their business.

I've recommended Pockit to dozens of friends & family. I've had about £40 in referral fees, and saved quite a bit through cashback.

It was the recommended prepay card on moneysavingexpert. It won't be now.

It was a Revolut card, we were able to add and transfer money to it.
We went down that route, as it was less hassle than exchanging a lot of dollars and would not be hit with transaction fees.
