Title: Suggestions, Please. New VDSL2 Modem/Router.
Post by: dgilbert2 on January 31, 2018, 09:21:00 PM
Can anyone recommend a combined modem & VDSL2 router that works with MyDslStats and a BT Youview box for subscription Multicast channels please?

I currently use the TP-Link W9970 but that falls over every 3-4 days with an ipc6023 error on Youview, requiring the router to be restarted.

My Zyxel VMG8924-B10A worked a treat with my Talktalk, then BT Youview service.
I highly rate it for a combined unit. Decent 5ghz AC Wireless. BCM63168 chipset (imo the best).
I'm confident in saying all the Zyxel models work with Youview Multicast.
The VMG8924 is seen as an older model now, its equivalent new model should be just as good.
It's still very much supported though with a new firmware this week I believe.

A Zyxel VMG8324/VMG8924-B10A would probably be my first choice too.

I, too, will say "ZyXEL".

In my case, not making use any IPTV hardware, I am using a VMG1312-B10A (and had previously, before it had a silly-fit, used a VMG1312-B10D).

Also big fan of VMG8924, I have 2 working 24/7 - I don't use IPTV though.  If you are patient they go sometimes on ebay in good condition for £30 so I think they are good value and still supported by Zyxel as mentioned above.

I have owned quite a few TP-Link devices (at least 4 routers plus other bits and pieces) and no longer buy them .... even though they seem to offer great value their support is terrible often with buggy firmware and they abandon devices very quickly before moving onto the next release.

IMHO they get away with it because innocent people buy them on price, and then think its normal / acceptable to have to have to switch their router on and off again every day or just don't understand why their internet stops working ... grrrr

<sorry about the ranty bit at the end, lol>  :-[

Just be a tad cautious regarding iptv. I tried a VMG8924-B10A in December and was unable to get it working, despite following the guides on here.

Is that BT TV/Youview though? They use Multicast which is different to IPTV.

If used in bridge mode, the modem doesn't touch Multicast stream. It gets handled by the router.

Youview Multicast works out of the box on the Zyxel VMG8924-B10A (full modem/router mode, no configuration changes). IGMP Snooping is enabled by default.

It was indeed BT TV Youview, using the Zyxel as a router with IGMP proxy and IGMP snooping configured. I was using V19 firmware.

Many thanks for all the replies, it is appreciated  :)

The Zyxel does seem to be a strong recommendation. I found a VMG8324-B10A at a good price as I don't need the Wi-Fi (use BT Whole Home) but it did not come with a power supply so that was the end of that  :(

I will have to keep looking. I then remembered I have a HG612 hidden in a draw, so for now I've flashed that with the latest B030SP08 firmware and will see how it goes.

Thanks again!

I initially recommend the VMG8924-B10A as you suggested you wanted a combined modem/router.
If it's just a modem you need I would suggest the Zyxel VMG1312-B10A.
It should be cheaper than the 8924, with the same dsl chipset/noise filter found in the 8924. It syncs higher on my line than any other modem I've tried.

I assume you have a BT HH5, as the HH6 won't let you run a separate modem.

Thanks yes, I have the HG612 connected to a HH 5B WAN port at the moment.

I need to do more homework as I thought the 1312 had the "budget" Broadcom BCM63381UK chipset the same as my original TP-Link W9970.

The VMG8324/8924 had the better BCM63168 chipset?

If so, does it make much difference to line performance though?

The 1312-B10A variant has the same chipset as the 8324/8924.  It is the 1312-B10D that has the budget chipset.

Blimey, thanks for that. I didn't spot that end letter making quite a difference  :o

The VMG1312-B10A is also a much better design to all the others if you intend on wall mounting it.
It's shaped almost identical to the HG612 and it's perfect for wall mounting right next to the master socket with a very short patch cable.

With a separate modem used with the BT HH5B you won't have to worry about Youview Multicast.
That's handled entirely by the router.

Now I have a puzzle! Having dusted off my old HG612 (3B) and updated the firmware, is there any advantage to upgrade to a VMG1312-B10A?! Decisions, Decisions!  ??? ???

Decisions, Decisions!  ??? ???

Only you can decide.  :D

If it helps, this techno-kitteh currently possesses the following devices --
All are capable of use on G.992.1 / G.992.3 / G.992.5 / G.993.2 based services. My device of choice is the ZyXEL VMG1312-B10A.

I found the 1312-B10A syncs higher on my line than the HG612 (3B) although depends on your line. If the HG612 is syncing at max speed then it is rather academic.

So I think it's fair to say that if you need a modem to use in bridge mode then you could go with either a ZyXEL VMG1312-B10A or a Billion 8800NL (not the R2)

Billion 8800nl r1 is v.good, if you can find one. Using mine in bridge mode, into opnsense for firewall and looped back to use the wifi on the 8800nl too, there's not many you can do that with.
