In Google news was this (https://gizmodo.com/from-porn-sites-to-starbucks-wi-fi-cpus-are-getting-hi-1821267144). Apparently people's computers' CPUs are being used unwittingly to mine for crypto currencies.

Unfortunately, according to Bleeping Computer, some cryptojackers have been using a simple piece of JavaScript to open a tiny hidden window behind a user’s taskbar. If the user just shuts down the window they’re browsing in and doesn’t close the full application, mining could persist indefinitely.

I hear the reason is because advertising isn't generating enough income.

So the answer is not to allow separate pop-up windows (I don't), and always use a flexible ad-blocker which can also include mining code in its block-list databases. I use 1Blocker for iOS Safari which seems to do a good job and is even extensible in that you can add user-defined block rules for additional annoying elements. The latter feature is driven by an excellent ‘annoying element selector’ visual user interface which takes away the time-wasting nightmare of having to write block rules by hand in some language or other (maybe CSS or something akin to it plus addition stuff) and get them right.

I simply do not use free wi-fi anywhere. I simply do not understand why people have to use their phones etc all the time :-X

The recent release of Opera 50 builds in protection against mining. This is in addition to the ad blocking that has been built in for a while now. (I whitelist kitz.co.uk.)
